How to keep your resolutions

Jan 02, 2011 01:27

The gyms and the tracks will be packed for the next 2 weeks. In 2 months only 8% of the people who make fitness resolutions for the year will continue them.

How can you be part of that 8%, instead of the 92% ? These will apply even for non-fitness goals.

1) Set realistic goals and don't bite off more than you can chew
2) Be specific and map out a process
3) Give yourself a range with a scale-back measure, so if you need to scale-back, it is controlled and pre-meditated.
4) Regularity and consistency is more important than intensity
5) Know how to prioritize your own list
6) Tell everyone you know, and ask to be held accountable (use social media if you like)
7) Reward yourself for each incremental success (provided the reward is not counterproductive to your goals)
8) Face your failures squarely, and recognize your challenges so you can overcome them.
9) You don't have to start in January. Find a start time that is right for you.
10) Spend a little time every day thinking about your goal, whether you truly want it and why. Focus on the benefits the goal will bring to your life. Every day, even days you don't do anything else.
11) Plan your day to include activities towards your goal
12) Visualize your goal (use props, pictures, desktop wallpaper etc.)
13) Increase awareness of activities that take away from your goal & catch yourself in the act.
14) Make yourself reminders of your goals, and set some formal evaluation points (email / calendar reminders, post-it notes on your bathroom mirror etc.)
15) Team Up - Try to identify someone else with a similar goal and check in with them regularly.

Happy New Year to all. May each of you fulfill your goals for this year.
