My cell rang in my handmade purse as I left school. I knew the ring, of course. It embarrassed the hell out of Stacey that my ring for her was “New York, New York,” so I kept it. I pulled my phone out of its pink fur case and answered. “Stace?”
“It’s Laine.” Her voice was cracking.
“Laine? Is she ok?”
“Not with us, no.” I tried to process. Stacey and Laine were friends again, in the same sort of way that Mary Anne and Kristy are-people you’re sort of obligated to because you have history with them, so you call them friends and IM them when you get into college.
“You know she was coming to graduation, so that we could drive back together for the cruise?” Laine’s parents had given Stacey and Laine a cruise to Bermuda for high school graduation; after all, Laine’s father is a Broadway producer (he had a hand in Wicked). My parents were paying for part of my laptop, complete with Wacom tablet and Adobe Suite.
“Yeah.”
“She’s not anymore. And now Mrs. Cumming is going on the cruise with Laine.”
“Why?” I asked as I let myself in my car and started driving home, as I helped myself to a Special Dark that was hidden in my glove compartment. Like I had to ask. I wasn’t stupid, I knew why Laine wasn’t coming. For all my complaints about my parents, they had been extremely cool with Stacey and I. Janine, well, Janine had given me a copy of the new translation of Sappho’s poems. Stacey and I finally got past all the boy angst and bullshit our sophomore year, and we’ve been dating since midterm week our junior year. I think the weirdest part was telling our friends who were in the BSC. We finally wound up emailing them. My version was:
Hey:
thought you should know. stacey and I are dating.
Heart,
Claudia
Stacey’s version, which we sent out, was:
Hello!
I know we haven’t been in touch, but this is something we thought you should know rather than hearing it through the grapevine. Claudia and I are dating. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail us.
♥,
Stace

We just got a couple of ok’s, (well, Kristy e-mailed us asking how we do it, but what do you expect?). It hasn’t been that big a deal, really, I mean, there was some gossip, but whatever.
“Because Laine doesn’t approve of my lifestyle choice.” I waited. Stacey’s a peer counselor at SHS. She told me sometimes its best to sit with the silence. I sat. “I’ve known her since forever. How can she be so dense? She’s as educated as I am. Fuck!”. She finally exclaimed.
“Fucking Laine.” I replied. I was almost home.
“I just can’t believe it. I worked so hard to be civil to her for our families, for the relationship, you know? And then she pulls this bullshit on me.”
“It sucks. It’s not fair.” I tried to comfort her.
“She was my best fucking friend!” Stacey exploded.
I pulled into my driveway. I saw a pile of Marc Jacobs shirt and perfectly highlighted blonde hair crouched on my steps. I jumped out of the car and ran to her, and my girlfriend collapsed in my arms as a I kissed her forehead.
