Title: The Scarf
Rating: PG-13

Written for: midnightwriting who requested Claudia/Mary Anne, after the Logan breakup and fire, and for them to live next door. I'm sorry it's so late!

After I broke up with Logan for the third time, I cried nonstop for four days. I broke up with him on a Sunday. The following Thursday a familiar face came to the door. I answered it choking back my sobs. “Claudia,” I said after taking several deep breaths “What are you doing here?” She smiled, and then said “It’s not just me. We’re all here to make sure you haven’t slit your wrists. Come out on to your porch.” I stepped out on to the cement and couldn’t help but chuckle, seeing all of the former BSC-ers. “Wow,” I remarked “You guys sure go to great lengths to make sure someone doesn’t commit suicide. I’m fine, really. You know that I’m an overly-emotional person.”

“That may be,” said Kristy in her usual loudmouth voice, “But we don’t care! We are going to consume ridiculously large amounts of chocolate whether you like it or not.”

As corny and cliché as this whole thing was, I couldn’t help but get teary-eyed yet again at what great friends I had. They stayed all night and it was just like we were thirteen again, still in the Baby-Sitters Club and having a sleepover with the leftover treasury money.

The next day after everyone left, I noticed that Claudia had left her scarf behind. Since she lived right next door, I walked right over to return it to her. I didn’t bother to knock. The BSC may have broken up, but we still made an effort to hang out at Claud’s, and as her neighbor I was over at her house a lot.

I ran up the stairs straight to her room and barged in. “Hey,” I said “You left your scarf at my house. Here,” I tossed it to her. “Thanks”, she said, turning around from her desk to smile at me. “Do you want a ding dong?” she asked. “No thanks, that’s why I broke up with Logan. He wanted me to play with his ding dong. I’ve decided to boycott ding dongs of any kind from now on.”

Claudia laughed for an entire minute. When she finally calmed down, she said “You’ve been hanging out with Abby, haven’t you?” I blushed “Yeah, I guess people who make silly puns tend to rub off on you.”

Claudia laughed again, but after she calmed the second time, a serious look appeared on her face. “But seriously, Mary Anne, are you really done with boys?” There was something else in her eyes, something I couldn’t identify. Whatever it was, it was making my insides heat up.

I gulped. “M-maybe,” I stuttered, my breath hitching. Claudia’s hands were on my shoulders now, pushing me towards the wall. I hadn’t seen this coming. I was only there to return her scarf, but now…

Her hot breath was on my face. My mind was spinning. Should I say something? Do I want this? The answer was simple: I did. Who knew for how long, and really, who cared? All that mattered at that moment was Claudia’s mouth gently pressing against mine, and our bodies tumbling down on to the bed.
