I got up early enough for Scottish hotel breakfast. This included the following things I've never had for breakfast before: baked beans, minced meat, delicious bread thing that I've only ever seen for dipping, grilled tomato, and black pudding which I never actually ate lol. After breakfast, I went back to my room to get my shit together for going to meet Simone and Shea (from Australia) at their hotel in the City. Luckily, I ventured close to that area the day before so it's all good.
I had to check out a lot earlier than I wanted to meet Simone, but I had no problem hanging out in the lobby. Nothing really special happened between this point and meeting Simone and Shea.
Actually, I saw a Cafe Crepe but it was shut down lol
So, finally! A familiar face in a different time zone, about to see the best band in the world! I also met Shea for the first time. They're both so stylish in comparison to myself, I started getting a little self-conscious lol. This hotel was awesome. It had two big clean rooms, a big clean bathroom, and a living room with a kitchenette. It was like a furnished apartment, I had to remind myself a few times that Shea didn't live there. We hung out for a while and chatted about music before dinner.
Dinner was Cafe India. I can't remember what I had but it was great! So was the company.
After dinner... ONWARD TO BARROWLAND BALLROOM TO SEE SUPER-FREAKIN'-GRASS. It was a 15 minute walk from the hotel.
I was having a bit of an issue.
The weeks leading up to this whole trip, I was waiting by my mailbox for the concert ticket! I waited kind of a long time to say anything to the ticket people because there were no problems getting my Paris concert ticket. Anyway, I was informed to bring a copy of the receipt, so I did.
When Shea and I arrived for ticketing, mine was waiting at the box office. OR WAS IT. Yeah, it was lol. HOWEVER, they didn't have any "Supergrass" tickets, so they used old "McFly" tickets. So. I have a McFly ticket dated April 2009.... I know, right?
I also had to check my camera :(
UPSTAIRS, THE MERCH TABLE.
Oh my goodness. The first time I saw them in Toronto (2003), I didn't go to the merch table. I regretted that decision until this moment. THEY HAD EVERYTHING. EVERY SHIRT that was ever on sale at Supergrass.com. Oh, and the second time I saw them in Toronto, they didn't have any march. ANYWAY THE MERCH BOOTH WAS HUGE AND I WAS DROOLING. HOWEVER, all the sizes weren't there. So I ended up with a really small shirt that takes a bit of time to take off. I got a shirt for Derek. AND THE PRICES WERE AMAZING. I think the deal was 2 shirts for £10. Even in Canadian dollars, that's a fucking steal and a half.
Finally, Shea and I went inside! We had some drinks, and made our way to the front!
About a half hour later, Charly Coombes and the New Breed were on stage! They were good! I never got a copy of their EP, which really sucks, I kept meaning to pick it up! Anyway, good stuff coming from those guys.
THE BIG MOMENT:
Before any of the Supergrassers took the stage, they played a nice little montage of their 17-year career on a projector. It was really sad but also really neat, and exciting, and I don't even know, so many emotions! Their setlist was divided up by album, starting with Diamond Hoo Ha then going backward from there. After the Diamond Hoo Ha montage, they went on stage and I fucking LOST IT. I started bawling my eyes and I couldn't really even see them because of the tears in my eyes lol. The feeling of seeing this band again was like nothing else. Even now I'm starting to choke up. It wasn't sadness quite yet, I was so happy! I think knowing I was going to see them again was the main reason for not feeling shitty.
It was just the most amazing feeling. Nothing else existed in that moment, not even the fact that I was in another country just to see these guys play my favourite songs live.
SETLIST:
Diamond Hoo Ha Man - Handclaps!
Bad Blood
Outisde
Rebel In You - All I could think about was that video Derek and I made of Lulu "dancing" to this song. It's one of my favourite songs of all time, I rocked the fuck out.
Tales of Endurance - I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. By the time Road to Rouen came out, I knew all their back catalogue, and this was my first new Supergrass album to be released. Know what I mean? Anyway, I remember seeing it a week before the release date at the HMV near Ryerson and it was like $30. I forced myself to wait a week and get it for cheaper lol. Anyway, I had my discman ready to go on the way home on the subway. I just remember sitting there and time changes and shit blew my mind. I went back to this moment when I closed my eyes.
St. Petersburg
Fin
Kiss of Life
Breacon Beacon
Rush Hour Soul - This song fucking rules
Funniest Thing
Grace - This song also fucking rules
Moving - Earlier that night, Shea was telling us about how the last time she saw them, the crowd went crazy and she almost died. When the guitar started in this song, I was getting prepared to be crowd raped and Shea said something along the lines of "oh shit" maybe?
She was right on the money. The crowd went fucking nuts. The guy behind me was kind of my protector from the back, and Shea was my protector on the right. I could feel the crowd through Shea's body. It was fucked. If it wasn't for those two, I would NOT have lasted the whole concert like I did. If you're reading this, Shea, thanks again for being my personal body guard, literally!
Mary - Everyone was getting the ah-ya-ya parts wrong, damnit! The spirit was great but that's not how the song goes!
Eon
Pumping on Your Stereo
In It for the Money - Thinking about Simone!
Richard III - This song also also fucking RULES. One of my favourites
Late in the Day - EMOTIONS. I'd never seen this song live before but I knew that when I did I would bawl my eyes out. It's competing for Favourite Supergrass song with Butterfly. Anyway it's so beautiful, and I finally saw it. Bucket list check.
Sun Hits the Sky - GREAT SONG TOO
Lenny
Strange Ones
Mansize Rooster - ALSO RULES
I'd Like to Know
Alright - WEEEEEEE!!!!!
Caught by the Fuzz - If this was the first song, I'd be dead by the hands of the crowd.
ALSO. I gotta mention the security guards.
The dude in front of me in particular was awesome. He was handing out cups of water and regularly checking up on me in the form of exchanging thumbs ups. I tried talking to him after the show but I don't know if he heard me. I was trying to tell him that Canadian security guards are a bunch of douchtards.
When they left the stage, we met up with Simone again and her mascara had been running lol
Simone went along with the band while Shea and I went back to the hotel. We were halfway when I realized I forgot to un-check my camera! We went back and a security guard was waiting around for me to pick it up.
I guess we got back sometime after midnight? I called Derek; Toronto time must've been 7pm. Weird. I tried to tell him all about it while trying not to rack up Shea's hotel bill. I stayed up watching TV for a bit then I went to bed.
