Sound and Fury

Saturday has not strayed far from Zev's side as they wait to hear from DOPE. He's afraid of West coming and getting him. If he thought West was coming for him then he would keep his distance, however he's smarter then that. And foolishly protective of his new lifeline to humanity and family ( Read more... )

"No!"
Zev screams the second the gun fires, but it does nothing to stop any of it. He's not strong enough to even move out of her grip. Not in time. Everything in him feels as torn and destroyed as if the bullets had fired through him as well.

He's staring into this strange woman's brown eyes and furious at the tiny part of his brain that wonders if that's what Sat's eyes looked like before. How can he worry about that now? When... When, what? Why does this hurt so bad? Saturday wasn't --isn't-- his boyfriend or even his lover. That wouldn't have mattered anyway. Zev has destroyed and even killed family, friends, and lovers. Why should this be any different?

Why, when Olivia lets him go, unarmed, does he not just leave and be done with all of this? There's an aching pain in his chest as the only answer and he hurries to Saturday's fallen body. She's probably going to kill him too, and right now there's not a goddamn thing he can do about it. Though some part of him hopes that puts her guard down. Hopes he's given an opening to fire on her with the second weapon, the semi-auto. Ruin her face and rip holes in her brain.

"You fucking cunt!"
He falls to his knees, bringing Saturday's head and shoulders up into his lap. He checks for a pulse. This can't be happening. This has to be some fucked up vicodin induced nightmare. He wants to nuke Saturday's whole fucked up country from space and let god sort them out.

Olivia tosses the gun out of the blasted out window. She doesn't hear Zev yell at her, but his lips aren't hard to read. She gets the gist.

Saturday isn't dead. He's loosing blood like a bastard. His open eyes looked exactly like Olivia's. Now they stare black at the ceiling finally blinking after a long while.
He begins to breathe again when Zev moves him. In rapid short breaths. One lung is collapsed and he's going into shock.

Olivia is off somewhere but comes back with a plastic pen, a knife, and a bottle of alcohol. She holds them out to Zev.

Normally, having his favorite gun tossed out a window would earn some serious violence out of Zev. Right now, his thoughts are elsewhere. His own heart begins racing the second he's sure Saturday's is beating at all. He strokes the agent's hair, not thinking or worrying about whether Olivia is going to kill him or if he's getting Saturday in trouble. If anyone makes a move towards them in aggression, they're getting at least two bullets in them before Zev goes down.

When Olivia brings him the tools needed for a field intubation, Zev doesn't know what to think. It needs doing, though, before Saturday stops breathing or drowns. He pours the alcohol over the agent's throat to clear the area before taking a deep breath and piercing Sat's trachea. The outside of the pen casing has alcohol poured over it quickly before being inserted in the hole to allow air in and out of the good lung.

"Jesus...fuck.... Saturday."
He doesn't know what to do. He's never cared this much about whether someone lived or died. He kisses Saturday's forehead and glares at Olivia.
"If he dies, so do you."
He'll find a way.

She missed that threat. Olivia is too busy staring at Zev like he just wiggled his dick in her brother's face in order to magic him better. At least that's what her expression says. She's never seen another man do that to Saturday. It's more then a little shocking, even though.. well she knew Sat was in the institution for a reason. She just never suspected homosexual.

His breathing gets a touch easier once the straw is in. She points to his blown out knees.
"Tear the pants. Give the bullet room to exit or you'll be cutting it out of him."
One would think this is a kindness, but she wants her brother to hurt and the slightest touch to his knees will be a world of pain more then just slicing the bullets out later. But Zev is obviously treating this like Saturday heals normally.

Saturday's face is completely white and lips lips tremble with the shakes. There's blood everywhere. Olivia needs him not to be dead.
"Move over."
She lays both hands over the hole in his chest and presses. She watches Saturday's face, speaking slowly to him. By time the shock is wearing off and both their hearing is back the bullets have clattered to the floor from his knees.

"You're gay now?"
She sounds incredious. Under her healing hands a finger slips into the hole in his chest and she twists it.
"Were you gay when you made mom suck your dick?"
Saturday screams louder then ever.

Zev mostly misses the look. He would leave Saturday alone if he thought it would help, but he really can't and doubts it would matter anyway. He would willingly cut any of the bullets out of the man as well. Cutting the will be painful as hell and he knows it, but Olivia seems oddly repentant and he's in their territory right now. Reluctantly, he uses the knife to do as instructed and tear the fabric open. He does this with as little contact with Saturday's knee and as little bending as possible.

Once Olivia wants Zev out of the way, there's little he can do to stop her. He feels like a feeble child next to these chemically altered super-humans. He hates that. He especially hates not knowing where the boundaries are. Where the limits lay. He's shocked when the bullets are expelled from the flesh on their own. He doesn't know what Olivia is doing, pressing on Sat's chest. He doesn't know what the fuck to do about it, regardless.

"Stop it! He's not fucking gay, alright? I am. ..." God, he made his own mother... Zev reminds himself that it was all because of that country's fucked up brain washing and policies. "It was your shitty fucking country that killed your family; that decided on bugfuck ways of treating people they disagree with! Fucking back off!"

Olivia isn't repentant at all. Despite the very obvious war zone around them- she never meant to kill Saturday here. Not because she doesn't want to. But killing your partner is always really looked down upon. At least before they're arrested. West was taken out of the nexus completely and Olivia plans to stay by her brother's side- if only to torture him as much as possible.

Saturday whimpers and cries out when the knees of his pants are torn. He keeps wishing he could pass out from the pain. Any moment now he should.. why isn't it happening?

When Zev defends Saturday against one of his most disgusting acts- she looks at him like she's sickened by him and feels sorry for him at the same time.
"You love him, but you don't know what he is."
She looks away. Zev is right. The government brainwashed Saturday. She knew him better then anyone in the whole world and she knows he never would have done those things otherwise. But she's too angry to let it go. She had gay friends. She was secretly an activist against the government, something she couldn't share with anyone, not even Saturday. Saturday had too much attention on him already and was too much a coward. Seeing Zev kiss her brother like that made her see him as those men she thought of as family that had to hide because of who they loved.

She takes her hands away. They're covered in blood. More oozes out of the hole already healing up. She has the bullet in her fingers.
Olivia grabs the straw in his throat and yanks it out with a horrible sound. Saturday hacks and coughs, rolling to his side.
"He'll kill you if he's told to. Because you want him. He's not a bad boy you can tame. Find another way to get your jollies off. Date a drummer."

No one else has said it. No one has seen them who would dare say it. 'Love'. The word rolls around Zev's mind and fits the ache inside of him just like a glove. He may not know everything about Saturday, but he knows too much to back out now. Even with all the good intentioned warnings in the world. Olivia is no one to him, but Saturday is everything. She has no pull here.

Zev holds Saturday close, trying to sooth him as the man coughs and gurgles through his healing throat wound. He's getting covered in the other agent's blood and couldn't possibly give a shit. He looks up at Olivia with confidence and determination smothering his misery down.
"He won't kill me. I know he won't. ... I'm not out to fucking tame him. ... I'm just his friend."
It pains him to say it, but it's true, isn't it? Strange friends, maybe, but friends.
"Why the hell are you here? Why did you do this if you aren't out to kill him?"

Olivia is still a romantic. Just a broken one. Zev was too upset over seeing Saturday in pain. Agent's don;t give everything away. If that's what slipped out then it must be love. And now he holds her brother and tries to calm him through the panic of breathing through the hole in his throat.

Saturday slips in the massive puddle of his own blood trying to scuttle into Zev's lap. His breathes are loud and desperate.

Olivia rolls her eyes at Zev's friend insistence. Instead of answering any of his questions, Olivia gives a speech she had been practicing for a long time and delivers it with the same tonelessness as a rape victim. She's told a lot of people what happened to her. She's still an activist.
"I'm not the child that the government kept Saturday. He's like a baby. Like most of them. They put him in that place and kept putting him back for things he didn't understand until he didn't know right from wrong anymore. They told him what was right. They told him that he should get married and he did. Then they told him he should take his family in and he did. They told him to watch us be tortured, to keep up in ice cold rooms, to stop us from sleeping, to keep us alive on nothing. Always questioning. Interviews out of nowhere and for 17 hours at a time. And then they told him to sit his baby brother on his lap as he broke every single little finger. Just slowly bent it back until it snapped. They told him to molest him. To hurt his baby sister. They told him that anything he wanted to do to us was okay and then they told him what he wanted to do."

As Olivia tells her story and he hears it from her for the first time, Saturday is trying to make himself a tiny ball and slip through the cracks of the floor. He doesn't want to hear this. He doesn't want Zev to.
"Mom offered him anything for him to stop hurting us and when she knew he was just another grunt solider she offered him what a woman does when she has nothing left. And he took that. And then he tried offered to let me-"
"SHUT UP, OLIVIA!!"

The hole is closed up now.

Zev helps Saturday move towards him and into his arms. This is the sort of affection that he probably should have had for his dying mother or for his cousins, but instead it's a first for him. This feeling of not being able to bear losing someone.

As Olivia talks, Zev doesn't want to listen. He knows parts of it and knows well enough not to want the details. He's not a man of strong morals and has even less in the way of familial loyalty. He tries to tell himself that what Sat did was no different than the things he did to his own family and that he let be done to him. They were both young and stupid and being controlled. Still, his hold on Saturday goes a bit slack and he can't help but wonder if the man would give him up just as easily.

"...Saturday..."
He wants the man to answer for this somehow. To say anything that will forgive his actions, even a little.

"I stayed silent all through my own torture. For years I wouldn't speak or cry."
Her voice gets soft and even her eye loose the burning hatred for just a little bit.
"Like the princess in that story book. If she didn't speak or cry for seven years her brother's curse would break and they could all be together. But in the end..."
Her mouth turns into a white line and then she sneers.

"I had to watch what you did to our family. All of it. I wasn't trying to take out your eyes, Saturday. I was trying to rip your brain out of your head because that's what I wanted for myself. But you deserved it."

Saturday does try to defend himself from Zev's lap, head down trying to bury it in the sand like always.
"... They made me do it.."
That's all he's got.

"We're going to be spending a lot of time together. Inseparable, like we used to be. Soon you'll wish I killed you today. You killed Jessica out of mercy. Since you didn't bless any of your real family with that, I can't say I feel the need to give you a favor."
She leans in toward Sat.
"You'll be surprised what you can live through, partner."

Olivia deserves her revenge. Zev doesn't doubt that for a minute. The problem is, he just can't let her have it. He doesn't feel too bad about that, either. What happened to her was part of a past he has no place in. What he cares about is now and what comes after. He has to believe Saturday has changed since then. The way the man clings to him now has to be proof of that.

When she leans in, Zev gives Olivia a warning look. They both know he can't back it up with much, but it's clear that he still intends to try. He holds Saturday protectively and glares at the woman who would dare threaten them.

"Are you about done? I think you've made your intentions crystal fucking clear. Now either fuck off to whatever rock you were hiding under and go back to wallowing in your own misery, or kill us both now and find out just what kind of reward you bassackwards Orwellian government shitheads give you for that."
His stare all but dares her to shoot him as he imagines the sort of torture she'd undergo for the insubordination.

Olivia gives him a look like he's suddenly retarded.
"Apparently not."

Saturday takes over explaining.
"She's not going to kill either of us and she's not going away. Don't you understand?"
Saturday gets it. Olivia said it outright. He killed Jessica to spare her from the torture, but let him family go through it. Olivia is going to put him through it now. She's not threatening death. She just promised not to deliver.

"She's my partner now, Zev. She's not going anywhere."
Saturday wishes there was a rock he could crawl under.

Oh, he gets it. He just imagines that, like West, she won't be standing over them in every waking moment. With the amount she's hurt Saturday already, he's hoping she'll consider her job here done for the day, at least. He's hoping to be left alone --even if just for a moment. A moment where he can plan a way around this new, worse problem than the last.

"I know..."
Part of him might have hoped she'd lose it and shoot him. Give them reason to take her away too, because they can't have anything worse up their sleeves after this.
Zev hangs his head over Saturday, his embrace trying to translate apologies he won't utter in front of this woman.

His body aches and he's tired. He wonders if she can hear the way his heart is racing. Wonders how much his body gives away to these agents. Saturday may want to keep Zev safe from the effects the dope has on them, but Zev can't help but wonder if he could kill Olivia if he just had equal footing.
"So what now? You just plan to torture him until they catch you? How long do you suppose that's going to be?"

At the height of their cycle, the twins can see individual dust balls in the cracks of a wooden broom handle from across a dark room. They have both powered down now but Sat can hear Zev's heart thumping like a drum and Olivia is watching the blood pump under his skin. zev is the main focus in the room right now. They are both regarding him as a sick animal. He may not be either of their target, but he's so tired and weak. Humans still react to that. It's silly to think on some level they don't.

Olivia thinks about it a moment.
"It doesn't matter. This is what I stayed alive for. This is why I accepted their offer instead of death. They were impressed with me, Saturday. They realized they chose the wrong twin. You're the only one that didn't know. You were a mistake and that's why you've been treated like the step child all these years. But we belong together. We always have. Would you rather I left you alone with Zev? If that were possible? Or would you rather I was with you and hurt you?"

This is all for Zev. She knows what her brother's answer is going to be.
"Don't leave me."
From zev's lap, has hand comes out behind him to grab her wrist tight.

Maybe there are some things that a person is destined to repeat time and again. Some mistakes that are so ingrained in the mind and soul that they can't be avoided, no matter how many times they hurt you. Whatever the reasons for it, maybe Saturday will always hurt and be hurt by those he loves. Whatever the reason, Zev will always abandon the ones who care for him so they can't hurt him.

"Sat...You stupid bastard."
Zev shifts and pushes a little, crawling out from under Saturday with a look of sadness and disgust. He pulls himself to his feet, feeling almost sick and wanting no part in this.
"I've got no part in this bullshit. So if I'm free to go? I'd rather not watch this little exhibition of atrocities. Thanks."

He'll go back to his room, drown the sound and memories out with drugs, and sleep for a day and a half before going back to his own world for a while. He needs to be far away from this. He can't save Saturday if Sat doesn't even want to save himself.

He looks up at Zev with huge black sorrowful eyes from where he's left on the floor, surrounded by devastation and still sitting in his clotting blood. His very quickly clotting blood. He's in a very gross pool of... gel.

"She's my sister. I thought she was dead... she's the only family I have."

Olivia is blank. It's not clear how she feels about breaking this relationship up. She wants to hurt Saturday, but Zev is sort of cannon fodder at this point and she didn't plan for that.
