Good post about self-publishing at 
rachelmanija's journal (dropping this link on my way out the door; we're off for four days in the wilds of Canada). I added some details in the comments about my own self-pub experience. It's hard to find solid numbers because people in self-publishing really don't like talking about how much they're making or not making, which is fair, but it also means there's a lot of misinformation and misconceptions around.
