SUMMARY: Nino is a PhD student, and his research topic is "Shojuntology". Ogura is his adviser.

Nino crossed his arms over his chest and pressed his lips together. He was sitting on a desk in an empty seminar room, preparing his meeting with Professor Ogura. It was his first year of PhD student in Sociology and Nino was required to submit his research proposal by the end of the week. He had an appointment to discuss it with the Professor that afternoon.

Nino thought deeply for a while and after he thought he was ready, he gathered his papers and headed for the Professor’s room. He knocked the door and entered after he heard the Professor allowed him in.

Professor Ogura was sitting behind his enormous desk. Piles of papers and text books scattered on it, almost hiding the big man.

“Oh, Ninomiya kun, please have a seat”, he got up and gestured to Nino to sit on the couch. He was fond of Nino. Nino was one of the smartest students he ever taught. Nino always got straight A since Bachelor degree, and his Master degree thesis discussing “The Role of Homosexuals in South East Asia’s Indigenous Societies” had won several prizes, and his PhD fellowship.

Professor Ogura was really impressed on how Nino approached the complicated and rather taboo topic in very interesting methods. Nino even stayed with various tribes in South East Asia for quite a while for his research.

“So, Ninomiya-kun, let me see your research proposal”, the Professor said as he sat on a chair in front of Nino.

“Certainly, Sir”, Nino handed one of the bundles of papers he had been holding.

Professor Ogura smiled expectantly. He was really looking forward for this meeting. He was so curious about what kind of intriguing, original, and brilliant topic Nino would bring to him this time. Professor Ogura was a vice advisor when Nino was in his master degree and he offered Nino to do PhD under his supervision, knowing how brilliant Nino was.

Professor Ogura laid his eyes on the title,

“Shojuntology: Origin, Definition, and Its Influence on Fangirls' Behavior and Japan’s Economy in General”.

Professor Ogura frowned, he re-read it for the second time and gave up. He never heard of Shojuntology, but Nino probably had done his homework and knew even better than him about Sociology. Or it might had something to do with Scientology.

The Professor read aloud, “Shodj…ahntology? Do you mean Scientology?”

Nino shook his head “No, Sir, I’d rather leave Scientology to Tom Cruise, and his cult”, he smiled politely. “And it’s Shojun-tology, not Shoj ahntology”, he corrected.

Professor Ogura frowned even harder…

“I will go through your proposal later but, since I’m not quite familiar with this “Shojuntology” , I’d prefer you explain it to me directly…”

“Certainly Sir”, Nino nodded and got up from the couch. He crossed his arms over his chest and walked back and forth, and began to explain the concepts of Shojuntology.

“Sir, I believe you have heard about Arashi’s popularity?” he began and could see the Professor nodded, although seemed still couldn’t comprehend how it had anything to do with Nino’s dissertation.

Nino continued,

“After spending a good two years researching about homosexuals in South East Asia, I decided now it’s time for me to do research at home, in Japan. And as you are already aware that I’m very much intrigued by the same-sexes phenomena, not necessarily homo-sexuality as in gays and lesbians only, but the things more subtle than those, such as interactions or admirations or affections from one individual to others with the same gender…..Sir, are you with me?” Nino turned and he noticed Professor Ogura only stared blankly at him.

“Oh, yes son, please continue”, Ogura said.

“And if we observe Arashi, it will be clear that their relationship is unique. They are very close to each other. The bonds between them are unlike other boybands. Also, what interested me the most is, the fans love it very much whenever they show their affection to each other, albeit in very subtle ways. So, I think this phenomena is intriguing. I mean, why those kinds of normal interactions between two people of the same sexes, could bring such excitement even hysteria, sometimes, to the fans, especially the fangirls.

I would like to propose a new branch of Sociology that study these phenomena which I define as Shojuntology. Basically, I’m trying to establish a theory about it, which will encompass the theory of its origin, definition, the symptoms, and its effect on the fangirls' behavior, and Japan's economy as well”, he said confidently.

Professor Ogura suddenly felt the urge to pull his hair.

“Japan’s economy?” he repeated

“I’ll get to the discussions about that soon, Sir, now please let me explain about the origin of the term Shojuntology, which is derived from the names of two Arashi members, as you might aware…”

“I didn't”, the Professor grumbled, he didn’t know the first names of those boys. He was really lost now and wondered about something and asked, “Are you saying they are.....umm, well.... gays?” he asked incredulously.

“No…., no Sir!, that’s not what I’m implying. They are them, they are not gays, but let’s say they have their own ways to show their affections, and they have a broader concept of love. And not only those two, all of the Arashi members are. So basically we can define this new theory of mine as Shojuntology or Yamatology, or Sakuraibatology or Juntoshitology, and so on…but my OTP is Shojun so, I decided to name it as Shojuntology”, Nino smirked confidently.

“And what the ff…. is OTP?” Professor Ogura was beginning to exasperate, he held himself from saying the bad word.

“Oh, that Sir, would be another technical term in this new field of study”, Nino nodded solemnly.

Professor Ogura wanted to bang his head on the table but managed to prevent himself from doing that. He inhaled a deep breath instead. He decided he’d give another shot to Nino, because well, Nino was so smart he might have a point on this.

“Ninomiya-kun, I’m not sure if I follow you but would you continue to your approaches on this topic?” Ogura asked, praying that Nino would at least make sense about the methods he planned to apply.

“Oh, I’m certain I will approach them…”, Nino said and Professor Ogura noticed he blushed. Ogura held his breath, was it possible that his stay among the homosexuals in South East Asia influenced Ninomiya-kun more than he thought? could it be that Ninomiya-kun was a….?

“Ninomiya-kun, are you….umm….with them, I mean….are you interested in Sho or Jun or…?”, the Professor hesitated.

“Oh no Sir, absolutely not, they are perfect for each other, I’m only shipping them….”, Nino denied it firmly…

“Shipping them??! Where to?” Professor Ogura was confused, again. Nino hadn’t talked about sending anything, or anyone to anywhere.

“Oh, excuse me Sir, that is another technical term, and I provided you with the glossary in my proposal, of course, please refer to appendix 2…..And I’m not interested in Sho or Jun, but, well, maybe if we’re discussing about their Riida, that would be another story….” Nino blushed again.

Professor Ogura rolled his eyes. He began to regret he offered Nino to work under his supervision.

Nino ignored that and continued explaining his methods.

“First Sir, I will begin my research by examining thoroughly their previous works. Albums, dramas, TV shows, magazine interviews, fan’s blogs, fan’s communities, etc. The next stage will be interviewing them directly, if they let me. Well, if Sho and Jun are not available I can always ask about them to Ohno san, of course”, Nino turned pink again.

Professor Ogura sighed, exasperated.

“Son, I think it’s a too far-fetched theory, and discussing its influence on Japan’s economy, it’s more than far-fetched, it’s crazy!”

Nino frowned and replied, “Is it Sir? Are you aware of how much Arashi worth last year? And the year before that?”

Professor Ogura shook his head.

“I thought so. Well, in 2009, their total sales was 14 billion yen, and last year, it grew to 17 billion yen”

“Well, that’s impressive, but…”

“And that is only for the sales of their singles, albums and dvds. That did not include the effect they had in flat screen TVs, DVD recorders, blue-ray recorders, smart phones, ipods, movies, and drama DVDs' sales. Not to mention the concerts' tickets, Sir. In this research, I’m planning to do some surveys on overall sales influenced by Arashi also. No one had ever done that before”

“But people buy DVD recorders and TVs because they need those, for the family”, Ogura tried to argue.

“Well of course I’m only talking about Arashi fans who bought those to support their fondness of Arashi. Did you know that almost all women who are Arashi fans have big flat screen TVs at home? And they also have more than two dvd player-recorders, and the number is growing, because they want to keep all Arashi TV shows and prefer them inside the dvd player, since that way it would be in better quality compared to saving them into dvds. Many of them bought many hard disks also”, Nino explained again.

Professor Ogura thought he would faint, he began to feel sorry for Nino. That smart brain was wasted by thinking of these crazy ideas.

“But young man, still, I don’t see how it connects to this…Shojuntology”, he sighed for the countless times.

Nino smirked, “Sir, you have no idea how Shojuntology motivates those fangirls, and fanboys too, maybe. For example Sir, Arashi will release another DVD in next June, in which very similar with the previous one, because it comes from the same concert tour, obviously. But do you know how many fans out there already eager to buy those only to catch some glimpses of moments of their OTPs? Oh, please refer to the glossary of  technical terms in the appendix, if you don't mind.

And do you know that many fans rush to the bookstores or convenience stores to buy magazines every time  they have even the tiniest bits of some “moments” between them? The thing is, they will spend their money only for something trivial, because of Shojuntology.

One of my goals is to find out how far Shojuntology affects the whole sales of Arashi, isn’t it intriguing Sir? And if we release my dissertation as a book after it’s finished, I’m sure the one million Arashi fans out there will rush to buy it."

Nino smirked smugly, he was sure he had convinced the Professor.

Professor Ogura couldn’t take it anymore…

“Ninomiya-kun, you’re wasting your time for this…”, he buried his face in his hands.

“On the contrary Sir, I’m having a great time researching this…..”, Nino frowned again.

“I can’t approve this son, you know that…”, Ogura sank into his chair deeper.

“With all do respect Sir, why not ?”, Nino protested

“Why not????”. Obviously, the idea is crazy! Professor Ogura wanted to scream.

“Just give me six months for preliminary research Sir, I promise I’ll be back to you with results you’d be proud of”, begged Nino.

Ogura pondered for a while, well, if it could make him give up.

“One month! That’s all you got”, he said sternly.

“Great, thank you Sir, you won’t regret it”, Nino smiled. He gathered his papers from the table, determined to leave the room before the Professor changed his mind.

“I hope you have other proposals Ninomiya-kun, in case this one doesn’t work”, Ogura grumbled.

“Oh absolutely Sir, I can propose Sakuraibatology if Shojuntology fails”, Nino said cheerfully and walked towards the door.

“Thank you so much for your time Sir, have a nice evening”, he said as he closed the door, leaving Ogura wanted to go to the Faculty Office, find some perverted Professor, and beg him to supervise Nino.
