Howdy old live journal. Life has been pretty even flowing lately, which I have to say is kind of nice. The summer has been quite relaxing, and I've been studying linear algebra since the semester ended, about a month ago. I really can't wait to head back to school, I always find it funny how I love being in school. Although it's been taking me so damn long to finish, I have to say I don't really give a damn, except for the fact that I've been missing out on a lot of the fun school party scene, since i work like mad. I've been checking out books on real analysis and topology at the local library, and it just gets me all excited school.
I'm kinda bummed on not going to Colorado this summer, since all my buds from last summer are heading back. Although I did just get back from doing some cool backpacking with Joe Zach and Taylor, it's just not the same as RMYC or CFI. I for sure plan on heading back next summer as a mentor and I also plan on quiting my job here in michigan so I can take a heavy year of courses.
Lately I feel like i'm starting to become more mature and yet I still act like a goofy kid sometimes, which i think is great. I hope to be a very funny yet respectful math teacher in the near future, so we'll see where it leads me. Speaking of math, There's something that's been bugging the hell of out me for the past year or so, and that's high school math and the scary "Calculus". I've found that a lot of highschool teachers have totally lost their perspective on math in the classroom, and how it should be taught, especially in high school. Kids are force to learn the symbol pushing Algebra I, then the ugly proofs for geometry, then it's back to box problems and the quadratic formula in Algebra II, then trigonometry and the god forbidden Calculus. It's like the math courses in high school just prepare kids for calculus, and yet they never explain to them what it is and how it's used. I remember in high school I thought calculus was the scariest thing ever and I didn't even want to learn it, but that's only because I had no idea what it was. It wasn't until my 2nd year of college that i actually studied it and found out how beautiful and sweet it is. I've turned my dad onto it too now. Every night he's studies it from a book, and I come in and ask him questions and discuss concepts with him. It's quite a learning experience for the both of us. On a little side not, I would like to mention Mr. Hart, just because he was the first math teacher I met that enjoyed math and teaching it, and his enthusiasm that hooked me onto math.
So yea, I have to go study now and enjoy this beautiful day.
