I stared at him like I was trying to peer into his soul but was getting no further than that grey jacket. "What is your problem?"
"Nothing."
"Sure. I stare at subway trains for an hour and a half and don't get on any when nothing is wrong too. Probably because they all look so different from one another."
"Sarcasm noted."
"Well either you say something or I'm getting on the next one that comes our way and leaving you here to brood. We don't have time for this."
"I think I know."
"Think you know what?"
"Why I'm here."
"So you spent the last hour of our time we would have spent searching, trying to figure out the meaning of life. Brilliant. Well at least you figured it out." I say, plopping down on the bench.
"I figured out my place in this, this mission or whatever." He looks down at his thumb and picks at his cuticle for a second then his emerald green eyes get lost in the sidewalk again. "She left me. She's my mother and she left me and I'm supposed to figure out why and whatever that reason is, it has something to do with all of these weird things going on. And it probably has something to do with you too."
"Which is?"
"Haven't figured that out yet."
I sigh and settle into the bench for what I can only guess will be the next few weeks of my life.
