It's probably the transfer skirt(round ball on the bottom). It's bolted to the bottom of the Falcon with shear bolts and can articulate to match the list of a sub and mate up to a 45 degree angle while the Falcon maintains "a zero bubble". It has an upper and lower joint. The upper can turn about 270 degrees while the lower about 180 degrees. Two hydraulic motors turn the two joints and there are delrin in balls in a groove as well uses a grooved belt that make the joints spin.

The old DSRV guys that I work with will call it the boat or sub. Since it is tethered I call it a vehicle. It's also is called the yellow school bus. The elevator. The PRM. Never heard it called a ship or vessel though.

The Falcon is flown from a control van that sits on the deck of a ship. The pilot and co-pilot are in the van looking at up to nine different cameras. There are 12 on the Falcon we can switch between, based on the evolution that's going on. I've only ridden inside the Falcon once(wasn't scared) and that was in about 480 FSW onto one of our training fixtures we have off of Catalina Island. Its part of the Channel Islands across from Long Beach,CA. As far as the Trieste goes, that's quite amazing.
Depends on the current as to how well we're able to see at different depths. Our deep fixture at about 1950 FSW not a lot. At our shallow fixture, there's a always fish as the fixture has become a underwater hotspot for growth of marine life. We did get inked by a squid this last underway. We have caught a few fish and starfish inside the transfer skirt as we go to mate with the shallow fixture. We'll go through a layer of what look like little lobsters. There's also the occasional submarine we'll see/mate with that's sitting on the bottom. That's usually pretty interesting.

And added comment is when we flew to Argentina to look for the ARA San Juan, we flew out of MCAS Miramar and loaded all of our equipment onto five C-17's and three C-5's. We've never taken every asset we have on a fly away. Usually for the International exercises we participate in we'll take an ROV and either the Falcon or Submarine Rescue Chambers and associated equipment. Never all three.

The US Submarine Rescue System-Rescue Capable System or Transfer Under Pressure is most often needed during what we call a Mod-Alert period. This is where when a US sub is coming out of a major availability (dry-docking, new construction) and is conducting sea trials. Our equipment is packed up and ready to fly to where the sub is conducting it's sea trials. We have had been recalled a few times while I've worked here. Other than the USS San Francisco and the ARA San Juan it's usually for some reason a sub hasn't "checked" in it's required window. The ARA San Juan was our first call up where we flew to Argentina, loaded out on 2 ships and began to search for her. The last actual rescue was the USS Squalus back in 1939 and the Diving Bell was used. Today we still use the Submarine Rescue Chamber as our shallow water asset 0-850 FSW holds 6 rescuees and 2 operators.. The other asset we is the Pressurized Rescue Module which goes down to 2000 FSW and holds 16 rescuers and 2 operators. We fly the systems overseas about every other year to participate in an International Rescue exercise. We go to sea in our local oparea off San Diego, CA about once a qtr. Last month we did a local op where we mated with the CNS Simpson who's up here from Chile.

In the Royal Navy this aspect of submarine operations is split into multiple elements of the rescue organisation.
There are a mandatory amount of signals a submarine must listen to and acknowledge receipt of, when these are missed they trigger a different level of alert depending on the time since last contact and these are (in order of severity) Sublook, Submiss, Subsunk as time increases between last contact it moves that submarine through each of these alert levels.
At some point decided by Northwood the decision will be made to deploy a team of serving submariners who are trained to jump out of a plane, getting a rhib ready for search and rescue and communicate with distressed submarines who will go as early as required abd they call it SPAG (Subsunk Parachute Assistance Group)
The ROV may be sent to the nearest port to the last known location of the submarine at any time during this period

As is often pointed out with "unmanned" air vehicles - there is really no such thing as an unmanned system (just unmanned vehicles) - it is really a question of where the man is located. One cannot expect AUV to improvise, something critical when exploring the unknown. We like to say that a manned submersible is the smartest AUV with the best manipulators and runs on 150W. Equipping a manned sub with a work class ROV has many advantages over having a huge dynamic positioning capable ship subject to weather and waves trying to control an ROV at the end of a miles long tether.
