During the Nuremberg trials, Hermann Göring was actually asked why the Germans didn’t use nerve gas on D-Day. His answer was ‘horses’: because of how limited their supplies of fuel were, the Germans relied on horses for their logistics, and horses refuse to wear gas masks. If poison gas became a feature of the battlefield and horses could no longer be used, the Germans would be at a serious disadvantage versus the Western Allies, because the latter could afford to have a fully motorized supply chain.
