Slam poetry critique
Slam poetry critique
Strengths- I really liked how the slam poetry flowed. It was like a rap song without the whole “Killin some bitches” aspect. It was like a song, but without the bridge. My favorite was by some guy named Mike and it was about life and death. He took everyday stuff like going to a bar and car accidents and spun it into this cool poem. It really didn’t rhyme, but it was still good. He also had great stage presence. He dominated the area and you couldn’t take your eyes off of him. I learned from him to use the space I have and to really engage the audience.
Weaknesses- A lot of the slam poetry wasn’t memorized and that took away from the performance. When you are reading from a sheet of paper it isn’t as impactful as total eye contact. Other than that I really like the slam poetry and would be interested in doing some myself.

Outside Performance critique
Undressing Academia
Strengths- You could tell that the performance was VERY well rehearsed. There were no slip ups and the show was an hour long so that was amazing. The two performers also played off of each other very well. One would fire off a line and the other one would shoot right back. Each performer also had a specific persona that they carried on throughout. Karma being the Mexican lesbian and Dustin being the Jewish gay man. Neither one broke character and they used these characters to really get there message across although the message got lost in the language. I really learned a lot about how performers should present themselves and how a well rehearsed performance can be impactful. Their flow of performance really kept the audience interested for awhile.
Weaknesses- First off the two performers came off as pretentious. This may have been planned, but the big words became boring after awhile and I just wanted to leave. Their topic of academia really went no where and I didn’t feel there was a sufficient conclusion. I felt like the performers were up there just to prove how important they are. To sum it all up I will quote my mother who said “All I got was that she was a lesbian and he was gay.” I learned not to let a performance lag and to have a clear and concise point.
