Steamcon 2 Report - Werid West Got Weirder!

Nov 23, 2010 22:47

Where to start? The whole month leading up to Steamcon was an adventure all by itself!

Originally, wannaseemymask and I had planned on heading down Thursday afternoon to get settled in, explore the area and possibly (if our help was needed) volunteer with setting up signs and stuff. But my Grandma was coming in early Friday morning and I wanted to see her before we left. Plus funds were tight and going a day later would be easier on both our wallets. So Friday became our arrival date. Do to the threat of snow, my Dad drove us down and her Dad picked us up on Sunday.

We got there on Friday, snagged ourselves a trolley to lug my duffle, her suitcase, her box and our large bag of food to the room. Checked in and started the fairly long trek to where we would be staying for the weekend. Nice room, good size for just the two of us. On our return trip to the lobby to return the trolley, we stopped by the Hilton's hospitality room to find out where Registration was so we could pick up our badges for the weekend. Met this awesome lady who had her work on display in the Art Show. She promptly shouted "My ride is here!" jumped on the trolley and demanded that we push her down the hall. Me being me, I promptly pushed her as fast as I could without running into anyone. X3 Ended up calling her our hitchhiker for the rest of the weekend. Anyways, got our badges then scurried back down to our room (taking the time to return the trolley proper at that point without hitchhikers this time) and put the finishing touches on our costumes. Was Steampunk Conrad and Worth from Hanna is Not a Boys Name. Vinny had built wings and I had to tap the girls down and go to town with a NASTY 5o'clock shadow. Which I got a Manscaping ribbon before because it was truly epic and disgusting. Hadn't got to play with facial hair since high school! And even then it was on other people!! Also gave a very nice, super tall gentleman the Tree of Nads speech. Vin has that video file so it'll be posted to the Valtiel's Angels youtube account asap I'm sure *pokes her* >-> After a few hours, went back to the room where I 'shaved' off my shadow, changed into my corset and we first went to the Victorian Beaded Christmas Ornament seminar. So cool! Finished mine already and started on a second one. Gives me an excuse to use up a LOT of my beads AND make some cool gifts for people this Christmas! While we were beading, we could hear them setting up for the DJ Dance. They were sound testing with Lady Gaga, which was awesome. Got to the dance and it was pretty much ALL 80's MUSIC!!! Guy played Dance Magic from Labyrinth followed by When You're Evil by Voltaire! Why can't more Con dances...or dances in general be awesome like that? Danced for several hours, then my bad knee started to remind me that I was dancing in heels and that it'd been a long day, so we went back to the room, watch Tim Burton's Alice and got drunk calls from my boyfriend before going to bed. X3

Saturday was Steampunk Alice from Resident Evil day, with Vinny as Wesker. I got to slick back her hair like whoa! Also made our shower look like we were re-enacting Psycho...got pics and video of me passed out in the shower alla Alice style. X3 We is hard core with our photoshoots! *nerd* Wandered around with 3 guns strapped to me. Got a lot of compliments and questions on my tights (people thought they were airbrushed, but they weren't. X3) and got some awesome photos taken in the photo booth Jail setting! Can't WAIT to see those pictures! Had an early dinner where we played Zombie Fluxx and had a couple drinks. Me with my awesomely large daiquiri, her with her pink Bay Breeze. Good times. ^^ Changed out of Alice (and washed all the blood off) and put on my red dress/corset. Went and hung out in Artist Alley where I got a lot of compliments on my dress (ego boost!) before wandering over to the other hotel. Chilled in the Hospitality room with some cool peeps until it was time to head over to the Cabaret for the Burlesque Show. Show started out pretty cool but then quickly went down hill when this lady came on that had a full hour, maybe more, long set. She was funny for about three songs, loved her Cuthulu song! But she really couldn't sing and after Cuthulu she just started to be way to much. So we went over to the DJ dance and proceeded to be nerds. Before we left the DJ was playing Walk the Dinosaur and let me tell you! Watching a group of people ranging from their twenties into their fifties all doing the dance to that song in their formal Victorian bustles and tail coats is absolutely priceless!!! Went and got more pictures taken at the photo booth, then went on an epic ribbon hunt! Which lasted a couple hours before Vin and I declared ourselves beaten, where we returned to our room, watched a couple movies, drank some bitch beer, ate a bunch of snacks then passed out.

SIDE NOTE: At Steamcon, you get these ribbons. There are usually random ones in your swag bag when you get your badge. After that, there are people around the convention who have these ribbons and you are either awarded them for things (like my faux facial hair) or because you participated in an event or something along those lines. It's like a little scavenger hunt. By the end of the convention you could have a string of ribbons that reached the floor. I WANTED A LONG STRING OF RIBBONS!!!! I ended up with seven ribbons by the end of the Con. Next year I MUST DO BETTER!!!

Sunday, we ended up waking up 45 minutes before check out time. XD OOPS! So we scrambled to pack everything, got checked out on time, took an extra 15 minutes after check out (YAY SPEED CHECK OUT) to make sure we had everything and was helped to the front desk by our good friend Hotel Security. X3 They were able to hold our bags for us until our ride got there, so we had a couple hours to enjoy what we could of the last day of the Con before leaving. We went to the dealers room, did some shopping, I stalked Girl Genius like I'm prone to do at these events, we hung out with the awesome Tea Guy who we have claimed as our Con Daddy. ^^ He is to date the ONLY person to successfully get me to drink a full cup of tea. I'm living proof that their tea will not make you explode! Anyways, chatted with him and said goodbye since we pretty much hung out at their booth all weekend when we weren't running around. X3 Then Vinny was awesome and bought me a new clockwork ring. It's to weird for me to ware my old one and my new one has a pretty red stone on it! *loves on her Vinny* And as we were heading back to Artist Alley to get my ring, it started snowing! So naturally I started my "HAPPY SNOW DANCE." Got my ring, we went and got coffee and then headed home. Snow was very light, wasn't sticking to anything but the pine trees and there's just something about snow on pine trees that warms my heart.

In short, good times were had and better times will be had next year!

Also, for those that have heard about the snow storm that hit Western Washington and the mass power outages in the Kitsap County area (where I live), I'm happy to report that I am in fact alive still. I haven't been driving in this snowy weather. When I have to leave my warm house my Dad drives me. We are lucky enough to have not lost power and even if we did, we have a generator with plenty of gas to keep it running if we need too. To my fellow frosty Kitsap Countiers, stay toasty! To everyone else in the US, stay toasty too!
