01.
They visit Carcassonne castle in the south of France on one of their days off. It’s Chris’ idea; he says they need more history in their lives. Dom spends most of the time taking pictures with his iPhone and sending them to their Twitter account. The rest, he spends reading snippets of facts aloud from the guidebook he bought himself from the castle’s gift shop.
While Dom stumbles over French pronunciations, Matt hides in a niche in the wall. He waits patiently, then jumps out and grabs Dom by the waist.
Dom screams like a girl; Chris can’t stop laughing.
02.
Dom drops his book in the chaos and the pristine pages fold under themselves against the cobbled ground. He punches Matt in the shoulder and calls him a tosser before he scoops it up and tries - unsuccessfully - to straighten them again.
“You’re buying me a new one,” he complains, while Matt and Chris continue to laugh at him.
Matt’s stomach hurts and his eyes are watering. He hasn’t laughed so hard since Osaka, Japan.
Dom glares and tells them he’s not going to read to them anymore. Chris says, “Thank god,” and Dom gives him a punch of his own.
03.
They continue climbing to reach the top of the highest tower of the castle, until the three of them stand, shoulder-to-shoulder, and peer over the edge of the rampart. It overlooks a small town nestled in the area nearby and it seems like they can see forever. All the long flights, all the exhausting nights of shows, everything is worth it for small moments like this. Moments where nothing else matters and it feels as though the short blink of their existence is nothing compared to nature.
Matt’s just glad he can share the experience with his two best friends.
04.
Matt can see the bridge that leads into the castle and the gently flowing river that runs beneath it. There’s a small crowd gathered on the bank; small children have their trousers rolled up to their knees and they’re splashing about in the shallow water. One of them has a model ship made of a dark wood, with large material sails, and when it’s set on the current, it’s washed downstream so quickly that the children have to run to catch it up.
He doesn’t know if they ever manage to reach it again, as he turns away and leaves.
05.
When they finally head down the turret and make their way back into the courtyard, there’s a circle of people around four men, who are dressed in renaissance clothing and playing lutes. It’s one of the best things they’ve seen all day.
When the songs end and people start walking away, Matt elbows Dom in the side and moves towards one of the men. He doesn’t know that much French, but miming works well. They take a picture of Matt in a silly hat.
Dom sends it to Twitter and they get four hundred replies in just under five minutes.
06.
Without warning, the sky grows as black as night and the heavens open on top of them. There are other people scurrying about, cursing in a hundred different languages, trying to hold their castle maps over their heads to keep themselves dry.
Matt and Chris struggle to find cover, while Dom laughs at them, casually flipping his hood up. They joked about him wearing a hoodie this morning, but he’s definitely getting the last laugh now. Well, that’s before Matt decides he’s had enough and flat-tyres him, causing him to fall into a nearby fountain.
It stops raining seconds after.
07.
Chris just about pisses himself laughing as Dom drags himself, spluttering and swearing at Matt, from the water. He’s drenched, a thousand times more so than either Chris or Matt, which makes it that much funnier. His jeans cling to his legs even tighter than they originally were and his hair is lank and flopping into his eyes.
Before Matt can react, Dom grabs him and pulls him into a hug, transferring wetness onto Matt instead. Matt laughs and tries to break free, but can’t.
Chris watches them, laughing at their antics, and says, “Stop it, you’ll scar the children.”
08.
Dom complains about water in his high-tops as they start to explore the lower sections of the castle. Matt can hear the squelching as Dom walks and can’t help but laugh. In response, Dom wrings one of his sleeves over Matt’s head, dripping water down the back of his neck, and Matt calls a truce soon after, not wanting to end up as soggy as Dom.
Chris walks ahead, leaving Matt and Dom to stroll behind. With a glance out of the corner of his eye at Dom, Matt says, “Well, at least you’re clean now.”
Dom laughs. “Yeah. Great.”
09.
When they reach the dungeon, it’s colder than before and Matt notices as Dom starts to shiver.
“Give me your hoodie,” Matt says, focusing his attention on a nasty looking implement of torture.
Dom eyes him wearily. “Why?”
Without saying anything, Matt takes his own jumper off and holds it out. Dom looks vaguely surprised, but doesn’t put up a fight, just tugs his wet top off and takes Matt’s offering. Dom holds his wet hoodie awkwardly in front of himself and mutters, “Thanks”.
“You’re such a married couple,” Chris says, before adding, “you’re missing all the dead bodies, look!”
10.
They follow the crowd back up into sunlight, where clouds are still in the sky, threatening to drop more rain on them, and decide they’ve had enough history for one day. That and also Dom won’t quit complaining about his toes feeling like shriveled prunes.
They walk away from the historical site, back across the bridge that leads into town, and Chris calls for someone to pick them up at the nearest café. Matt looks over at Dom and finds him pressing his nose into his own shoulder, blatantly sniffing the clothing. Dom looks up and grins.
“Smells like you.”
