"Charging ahead blindly only works when you have a goal." That sounds kinda wise, doesn't it... Personally I'm the charging ahead type, but I was always charging ahead on a narrow line. That's a good metaphor, isn't it? I've decided to stop trying to force it. If I'm really apparently so mature and not-seventeenlike, I can't ruin it by acting ( Read more... )

A favor you're probably gonna dislike.

You said you were gonna be a doctor again. Well, I know it's obnoxious to ask, and most of the other doctors are refusing point blank... but I wanted to say, if you ever decided to take chips out, and the place they're in now is ever found out... I'd appreciate it if you could consider me for that.

Oh! That's not an issue at all... I officially retired chip operations last time I was here, but I'm still willing to reconsider on special cases. Of course, I'd have to make sure you don't have an ability that would cause too much of a problem when you lose control of it, but you seem trustworthy enough, so I'm not too worried. I can't make any absolute guarantees, but I'll do what I can to help you.

Of course, I haven't spoken to the other doctors much since I got here, and there are a lot of new ones, so I don't know if I'm really a "part of the team" yet. They might not want me performing operations. I think Dr. Weaver's still around though, and she was the one who asked me to begin helping last time, so...

What reason did the others cite for refusing you?

Wasn't like that. With the killings going on, everyone started demanding it all at once. A couple doctors just said, "I'm not doing this at all anymore, ever." I didn't ask at all, 'cause I didn't want to be a bother... and because I'm actually okay without my magic.

But people have been showing up who might hurt the people I care about...

My powers... I have lightning, that comes naturally to me, so that might be a problem at first. But I can also use some spells - create gohoudouji, spells that can be used as messengers, or spies, or to protect others. I can also heal really fast and move really fast. But the real reason I'm asking is... I can create a kekkai. A barrier. Nothing can get in, nothing can get out - unless I want it. It can cover up to two kilometers, and any damage done inside it won't be transferred to the real world when I take it down. The only way to remove it - or leave it - by force is to kill me. A shield like that...

I understand that. During my last stay, I made a poor choice on whose chip to remove, and others suffered. I've seen other medics end up similiar siuations. However, I don't believe abandoning it all entirely will help anyone. You try to learn from your mistakes, and you keep working.

I see... That all sounds really useful, but it has a lot of potential to be dangerous. Make sure you'll have preperations for a place to stay when you lose control of it. You'll have to isolate yourself from the rest of the city in a way that'll prevent your lightning from causing any injuries. Do you think you can handle that?

Honestly, I can see their point of view. It's handing people weapons. I think... even me, I've relied on my magic too much in the past. I'm just being a hypocrite anyway.

Don't worry. I can keep to myself, if it happens. I've been here long enough off an on that I've seen what it can do. As long as I don't touch people, I don't think I'll be too dangerous, but I'd definitely be careful.

It is difficult... You never know if anyone's going to be truthful about their abilities or not. Even if they are, the lack of control can be a disaster.

You're doing the self-deprecating thing again! Quit it!

I'm sure you wouldn't do anything rash, but don't underestimate the risks, okay?

Most people will take it as far as "with my powers, I won't be useless." And it's definitely the truth... but the fact is, "useful" can be in many ways. I think being powerless is underestimated, and it's not self-deprecating because I know perfectly well I'm contradicting myself.

Don't worry. If you say I'd have to camp out in the woods for month, I'd do it. I just want to be able to use my kekkai again.

That's very true. However, it can be frustrating to know that you're being limited... I've never not been able to feel my chakra, and it's a part of who I am. It's my primary strength, so I really can't can't stand being without it.

Well... I know of plenty of people who didn't have to going that far. Some were able to get away with just locking themselves in their rooms, others used a warehouse... I trust you to pick whatever's necessary.

Yeah. I definitely understand both sides. I guess I just lean towards the peaceful side, even if that means no healing magic or anything either. There's nothing inherently wrong with being "normal," after all.

I think that if I just avoid human contact and don't try to use my powers, I'd be okay, but we'd have to see at the time. This isn't exactly a "tomorrow" kinda deal.

If everyone was normal and there weren't any monsters to worry about, I'd have no issue with it either.

Right. You've probably got a lot of time to think about it, unfortunately...

Ideally, something like the police with powers and the rest of us without would be nice. Give powers to authority...

[...] I can't... say either way, but Satchan... that is, Saber... she might have gotten her chip removed. Actually.

Not everyone would agree with that... While it'd certainly make things easier, there's great potential for an abuse of power. The situation is too chaotic and informal to let the police force become too strong, especially since it'd be easy for someone to manipulate a system like that. We need to keep everyone on a playing field as close to even as possible.

Did you both arrive around the same time...? That definitely suggests that they already know your location...

Well, yeah, but, if the police were made up of people like you...

We came here around the same time originally, I think. I don't know for sure if hers is out, but...
