Thinking back to last time I was here... the scientists kinda did weird stuff on Christmas and New Year's and a couple of other holidays, didn't they? But maybe they'll be overcome by love this time and it'll be nice instead of weird. I hope so. This will actually be my first Valentine's Day. Believe it or not, monks don't usually celebrate it ( Read more... )

I was told last year one of our gracious hosts gave everyone chocolate.

Well, that's nice of them, at least. Especially if it was good quality chocolate that can be recycled.

I'm rather looking forward to it, if they do it. Chocolate isn't something I've had much of.

To be honest, I don't have much of a sweet tooth. But what I'd really like is chocolate for baking, y'know? Chocolate cakes and things. Is chocolate one of those things they didn't invent until the modern age?

Invent is a bit of an odd way to put it. More like the introduction of it has only been recent. You can get it from western style cafe's sometimes, and there are a few other places that make things with it but it's really expensive. A lot of people still prefer traditional sweets as well.

Well, I like traditional sweets, too... I guess it's true that the more "modern" things become, the more Western influence there is, though.

I suppose that is true.

We get a lot of tourists at Kouya, too. I don't think it's bad, and there's definitely old stuff, and I like western things, but I guess it is a little unusual.

I don't mind western things, but sometimes it's a little sad to see things change. But life is about change right?

Lets just focus on things hopefully being fun during this holiday thing.

Really. Although I don't know how "getting chocolate from cute girls" can't be fun.

You're suppose to get chocolate from girls? Someone told me you just gave gifts to people who were important to you.

Oy. I get it from other people, but you're Japanese, y'know. You should know this already.

Valentine's Day is a day where girls give chocolate to the boys they like. It can be giri-choco or friendship chocolate, too, but it's mostly a romantic day. Couples celebrate it.

Well, last I checked there was no such holiday in Japan. The only holiday that I can think of round this time ain Febuary is kenkoku kinen-no-hi. Which isn't the sort of thing anyone here would be celebrating.

So it's a modern holiday... I didn't know that, either.
