Pretty sure it was real. Just be glad there weren't any enormous, grossly misplaced eyes on it.

It's not much of a joke. The thing mutated out of control until it became a giant, shapeless mass of bone, muscle, and tentacles. If I had to pick, I'd rather endure the flower.
