Say a little prayer for Widin please...

So bad news everyone.

This horse:

a.k.a. Widin, my horse's best friend and life partner, is not doing well at all. Like, we may lose him.

Sunday he was mildy colicy. It wasn't terrible, but he just wasn't right. We had the vet come out and he worked his vetmagic and said to keep an eye on him but he (being the vet) expected Widin to get better on his own.

Not the case.

I stayed with Widin for 6 hours as my trainer had to go drop her son off at his school in North Bumfuck, NH. It was a long ways away so I offered to stay. I did as long as I could, but I had only about 3 hours of sleep the night before and I was so tired that I was worried about making my hour and a half drive. I called my trainer to let her know I was leaving. I told her Widin was peeing and taking treats, both good signs. She said she would be heading back down soon and said it was fine for me to leave.

I will now forever feel guilty about leaving him.

Although the barn owners were there with Widin, they are really clueless. Widin took a nosedive and the situation was just not handled properly. Had I been there, things might have gotten handled better and faster. I feel really bad about it. I should have sucked it up and stayed.

The vet was finally called back out and he said Widin had to go to the emergency clinic "right now". Widin was tubed, given some fluids, tranqed, and loaded up. My trainer met him at the clinic and was there with him until close to 3am.

The next day (Monday), he was still not good. They expected him to be okay within the next few days. He took another nosedive. That afternoon he went in for surgery. He did make it through the surgery, but I haven't heard much since. I don't want to call and bother them, and I know if there is anything to report they will let me know.

If he does survive, the recovery sucks. It takes such a long time and he may never be back 100%. I feel so bad. His owner is the nicest person alive and she just lost her old mare at Christmas. I can't imagine what she is going through. She doesn't deserve this at all.

Widin is one of those "once in a lifetime" horses. He is a superstar. Everyone who meets him loves him. To see him go through this is bad enough, but the thought of losing him is more than we can handle.

Please keep Widin and Mary (his owner) in your thoughts. Say a prayer for him if you do that kind of thing. I am praying my heart out for him.
