I just have to keep posting today I guess. I am just so excited that John Force won. It's like a championship all over again.
Well, I forgot to post before that one of the reasons Ashley Force DNQed was her last run. It was a little piece of metal.
Before each pass, the cars do what is called a burn-out. They smoke the tires to heat the rubber which increases traction and removes debris. To do this, they put the car in very high gear and use what is called a throttle stop. The throttle stop basically keeps the injector (air intake on the front) from opening all the way which takes away horsepower and does not allow the engine to take off like a bat out of hell like it normally would. The throttle stop is a little piece of metal that sits on the lever that opens the injector.
On Ashley's last qualifying run, her last chance to get in the show, they couldn't get her throttle stop off. It's a 1.5 inch piece of metal and it shut down a couple hundred thousand dollars worth of hot rod. I was like, "are you fucking kidding me?"
Team Force has had some throttle stop issues lately. A couple races ago, Robert Hight's team forgot to take the throttle stop off after his burn-out. He smashed the throttle and the car just died. They couldn't figure it out until Robert, over the radio, said, "It's the injector. They didn't take the throttle stop off". So once again, a little piece of metal shuts down a few hundred thousand dollars worth of racecar.
Just ducky.
Today Robert, for the first time in his career so far, lost on a holeshot in round one. A holeshot is when two cars run nearly indentical times and speeds, but one had an advantage off the starting line from a quicker reaction time to the lights. Sucks for Robert, but I know he will be back next week in top form.
John celebrated his 123rd victory like it was his first. He was just so thrilled and happy. After finishing his interviews, he jumped on his little red scooter, zoomed back up to the starting line, and hugged the crap out of John Medlen (Eric's father). It was emotional for all of them.
Force said, "We went from being one of the greatest teams ever in the sport, if I can pat my own back, to being the worst, right there in the cellar. We just couldn't figure out what was wrong. This [car] was the most stubborn woman I've ever met in my life. No matter what we did to her she wouldn't go down the track. I couldn't even beat my own daughter. We spent a month going through the car from one end to the other and we couldn't find nothing. The only thing left was the chassis and [crew chief Austin] Coil. I can't get fire Coil because he'd just write a book about me and make a lot of money, and don't think he don't tell me that. It's easy when you're on top to be a good boss. But this year I've been a jerk. I finally got the guys together this morning and apologized to everybody. I told them I was wrong, that this isn't how you lead. And, I don't know, the attitude changed.
"I also asked Eric Medlen to forgive me. I said, 'I know you're up there Eric and if I've done something wrong, I'm sorry.' I don't know how all that works but it made me feel better in my heart to get it off my chest. I'm not seeing aliens or hearing voices, but today we started having magic."
Ahhh, we can all sigh as the old John Force is back. Wild, whacky, and fast as Hell.
Only a couple hours until coverage starts. When it does I'm ordering myself some cheesy bread, a bottle of soda, cracking open my Smirnoff shooters, and having myself a little party.
I haven't been this happy in quite a long while.
I <3 John Force. Like woah.
