Somehow I've developed strong interest in the construction of American culture, especially the wackiness of the suburban lifestyle. Tonight I watched "Little Children," which Fr. Recio recommended to me about a year ago, and it really struck a chord. Back when I was doing the (initial) college search, I often wondered how one could pursue a degree in American studies, because it seemed to me a discipline comparable to a tide pool -- expansive, but shallow. Now I'm absolutely fascinated by the suburban lifestyle and how deceptive it is, and I suppose I can write a heft of essays based on my observations. I'm really, really excited about this autobiography course, which begins in about 3 weeks.
The soft transition back to suburban life has been awkward during my past two visits. At this point, I don't feel the need to transition, I just feel the need to reassure myself that this is merely a visit. It's nice to be able to do my laundry while barefoot and in my underwear, but strangely, a greater comfort comes in knowing that it's temporary.
