So I got into Graphic Design at Uni SA.  Woo hoo.  I was excited until just now as I've just started getting caught up in the stress of trying to figure out what the fuck is going on with enrolement and orientation.  Uni SA is at an extremely annoying part of the city to get to by bus and I have no idea where the parking area is.  The Flinders ( Read more... )

"So I got into Graphic Design at Uni SA. Woo hoo."
Congratulations on being an offered a place! That’s not an easy thing to do.

"I was excited until just now as I’ve just started getting caught up in the stress of trying to figure out what the fuck is going on with enrolment and orientation."
I know how you feel. I remember what it was like starting at uni, and it can be confusing, but as you know from when you enrolled in Flinders, it gets easier. If you go to the UniSA website and search ‘new students’ the first thing on the list is the new student welcome page. It has a TON of information and will answer just about every question you have. I used it a lot when I started last year. It’s a godsend.

"UniSA is at an extremely annoying part of the city to get to by bus and I have no idea where the parking area is ... The only other option is bus and I’ve just found out that you can’t take a bus straight to the city anymore from where I live."
I’m pretty sure there’s no parking at City West campus, but it’s just a little way along North Terrace, just up from Swish. Yes, you do have to swap buses at the medical centre but even if the right one you’re supposed to connect to comes late or too early, there are buses going to the city coming through the medical centre all the time. If you don’t want to take a bus to King William Street and walk, you could always park your car at a train station (some of them have good Park N Rides, such as Oaklands) and get the train in. If you get off at Adelaide station, right at the end, it’s quite a short walk to City West. If it’s hot you can hop on a tram for one stop.

"Why ... can’t Flinders have a Graphic Design programme!?!? Flinders was always such a great place to study. Flinders was MY uni. It was an awesome awesome uni!"
Flinders can’t offer everything - just be glad that you can study graphic design in Adelaide and don’t have to move away from your family and friends. It’s good that you have such great memories from Flinders, but maybe in 3 years’ time you will have equally good memories about UniSA.

"It had such a great library and a big lake to lie by filled with ducks and a giant goose. It had people I knew like Jade and Ali. It had the tavern, where you could relax and grab a beer on your break."
UniSA has many libraries, and they have heaps of computers available, way more than Flinders did. They may not have couches but you can always look forward to your couch at home. If you want a big lake, go to the Torrens, it’s a short walk away, there’s a great walking path on both sides, there’s ducks and geese and lots of benches and everything. And you will make new friends. You’re often saying how you would like to meet new people, now’s your chance :) Also, UniSA doesn’t need a tavern - you’re in the city, there’s lots of places to get beer.

Let me know if you need enrolment help or any of that stuff with UniSA. It's all online and it's pretty easy, there's a guide to walk you through, however I understand it gets confusing with the stupid study period thing instead of just semester 1 and 2.

Sometimes I really can't stand Adelaide. I mean I do love it - but in a different way to you guys. I'm suffocating here. I am in the biggest rut of my life. The only reason I haven't packed my bags and left is because of you guys. I would literally hop on a plane with my savings and stay at Heather's place til I could find my own. When I went to Melbourne the other weekend - I was there for two days. And in those two days I encountered more opportunities than I had encountered in Adelaide in the last TWO YEARS. That one day I walked around and looked at the buildings and thought "I could do anything here". I felt free for the first time in years. I walked around the CBD on my own where I had no idea where anything was. I've only ever been there once before, but this time it felt so much more like home.

If we (meaning your friends) are the only thing keeping you in Adelaide, maybe you should reassess. Communication between people in different cities has never been easier and flights between Melbourne and Adelaide are pretty cheap.
Not suggesting that moving to Melbourne would solve everything... just saying that we are not a good reason for you to rule out the possibility. What if you turn around and look at us in 5 years time and blame us for stopping you? When we never really did?
