I'm loving these guys right now. So originally they were TRANSTIC NERVE, then the Underneath, and now having lost a member these talented musicians have formed defspiral. The debut album PROGRESS is a great listen, starting of good and getting better and better. What drew me most into their music was the unique vocalist, TAKA. He's a surreal blend of D'espa's Hizumi, L'Arc's Hyde and T.M.Rev in a.b.s mode. In fact, their individual vocal styles can be found independently in various tracks on the album. But the overall voice belonging to defspiral's TAKA is strong, and an energetic performance on each song really helps the album.
Highlights for me are singles DIVE INTO THE MIRROR and REVOLVER, both of which stick in the mind long after the track has finished playing for the third time on loop, and surprisingly ballad-like 月とヴィーナス which has the gorgeous line "I'm always waiting just for you..." leading into a harder riff reminiscent of music from the CROWS ZERO films (which I watched recently and enjoyed greatly). Final - and title - track PROGRESS is shorter than I would have liked, much like Threshold from Versailles' latest album Holy Grail, but what's there is powerful and uplifting stuff.
Go listen to these guys! You can easily find their music on YouTube, or go out and buy this great debut album from third-time band defspiral. Fans of the Underneath will love this evolution the members have taken, maintaining the harder style while certainly making PROGRESS with their first full length release.
