I am pretty sure it's female breast. If you think of a standard-issue Soviet rukomojnik, with the water spilling downwards from the bottom, it's pretty difficult to put male chest (which is normally a vertical surface) under it :-)

I swear I did it myself when I was a kid. The technique was pouring water on one's neck where it kinda soaked down the chest. I mean, how else. It is specifically designed to wash one's hands and it is not too good for anything else. I do not get the whole thing. I wonder if he himself tried what he was writing about.

My logic in assuming a male breast was that females did not wash their torsos under the mentioned hand-washing device, but males quite frequently did.

why not? in many houses with water coming from wells these things were hanging indoors.

by things I mean rukomojniks, not breasts :-)

Have you ever heard of a woman washing her torso from "rukomojnik"? I've asked around, and the unanimous answer was "no". This is nuts. If you do not have running water, you use a ewer and a bowl, you do not use "rukomojnik." I can imagine this bowl being called "rukomojnik" as a feat of poetic imagination, but you cannot put your breast UNDER it...

Of course. I used to live in a village in Ukraine where these things were pretty standard in bathrooms. Seen them in other places, too. People of both sexes would use small bathtubs for a full wash, but rukomojniks for quick above-the-waist ones on hot summer days.

I see. So you've seen it being done.

when you were a kid, your chest was below the device. if you were a grown-up, it would be really awkward.
