Why do we have the blind spot?

The "blind spot" (anatomical optic disk) is often given as the example of "nonintelligent" design. The contention is that having a region where the optic nerve and the blood vessels enter the retina creates a "hole" in the visual field that is only partially compensated by having two eyes and advanced neural processing.
