I'm back in Edmonton now. Had a nice holiday in Fort McMurray. I should've updated while I was there; I won't recap everything now. I got to see a bunch of friends and spent lots of time with family. Cindy threw her annual after-Christmas party, which was a blast as always. This year, the theme was an Iron Chef Party (with a "pear" battle -- I made a poached pear in red wine sauce, or le pear du wine[1] as someone dubbed it). Congratulations to the winners: Soo for presentation (pear dumplings); Chris Amyot for originality (pear sushi); and Leslie for taste (pork and pear, or porky pear, hehe).
One of my highlights, as uninteresting as it may seem, was a late-night walk I took in the trails a few days ago. It was so intensely nostalgic and wonderful. As much as I talk poorly of Ft Mac from time to time, there are things about that city that I definitely miss. The sky is one of them. Not just the stars, but the saturated moonlight illuminating the untouched snow amongst the tall pine trees. The dark sky hiding in the light of the stars feels like a comfortable blanket overtop a snow globe. The steep dips throughout the trails echoed memories of races with friends when gravity would take over our feet. The walk inspired me to go on many more here in Edmonton in the new year.
A movie which I watched (again -- it's an older movie) over the holiday that I highly recommend is
Waking Ned. If you appreciate good humour, a slightly dry wit, and Irish culture; this movie is for you. It's not overly spectacular by any means, but it's a good comedy with some nice moments throughout.
Alas, now, I must go to sleep. The last sleep of 2006. It was a good year for me; I hope it was a good year for you, and all the best wishes for a safe and happy 2007. Happy holidays folks.
[1] My dad pointed out that le pear du wine is not really proper French grammar. He said it should have been le pear au vin or something like that... feel free to correct me; I really have no knowledge of French beyond "cereal box" French!
