the slam

so i'd seen an episode of graham norton a couple years ago that stuck in my mind... natalie imbruglia had brought a treat from her native australia - the tim tam. the doe-eyed wonder proceeded to describe and demonstrate the "tim tam slam". i can't say why, but i was enthralled.

i searched the only shop in town that might carry them, "cost plus world market" [have you noticed how some people will call it "cost plus" and others "world market"? i'm a world market girl, if you were wondering]. no luck there. i'd shelved the idea until a conversation with sensaes inspired me to check "tim tams" on wikipedia. lo and behold - the bastards ARE in world market, but they're billed as "arnott's originals".

now i've got them - and you can get them too! but once you claim your own magical package, what do you do?

first admire your rectangular, chocolately, sandwich cookie...with smooth chocolate moussey filling... dipped in yet more chocolate. bite off one corner... and its opposite. wrap your delicious lips around one bite site... submerge the other in your not-too-hot cuppa tea. suck. suck on the biscuit-turned-straw until you feel tea touch your tongue, then - quick as a whip! slam the entire cookie into your mouth before it falls apart. the chocolate coating has kept it intact until this moment, but once you close your mouth around it, it will melt into rich cocoa madness.

when i had the extreme pleasure of doing my first slam today, a friend asked what it was like. she said, "is it all mushy?". an understandable, but pitiful assessment... however, i couldn't dodge that affect which compells me to say the most wrong thing... so the best description i could offer was "it's like willy wonka coming in your mouth".

what? YOU try it and think of something better. it's hot, wet, thick, and chocolatey... and just a curious wonder.

cooking, curiosity
