[Rec] The Least of These

Back to rec'ing fics for a bit. Probably rearrange the way this whole recommendation deal works. Haiz. Let's see how long the urge will last me this time...

Title: The Least of These
Author: Josh
Status: Complete (technically, it's 16 chapters + epilogue, but it's actually 19 since 12, 13, and 14 consist of two parts)
Genre: Romance, drama
Rating: R
Warnings: Um, lots of smex? But it's not a PWP, I swear; it's got serious plot. And, if you find underage (and consensual) sex icky, this is not for you, unfortunately.
Summary (by author): You see, happily-ever-after lives don't just happen. They are earned or lost, one decision at a time. I wanted to write a story that would show the nature of those choices, the types of sacrifices that must be made in a long-term relationship, and the uncompromising nature of true commitment.
More specific summary (by me): This is a story about Mickey and Davey, from the time they first met at the age of six to the happiest day of their lives. As one is a bright and outgoing boy while the other one has always had slow mental development, their relationship has to overcome plenty of obstacles before reaching the goal of true commitment.

Opinion: You'd think this would be seriously angsty. I admit, it has its moments, but the author always pushes the right buttons to lighten it up. To me, Mickey didn't come off as a shining and perfect hero who fought the world, extended his hand to the mentally challenged little kid, and promptly proceeded to fall in sexy love. Oh yes, their love is sexy, but it's also tentative, adorable, bumpy, and happiness-inducing. Mickey is just like your boy next door and there were times I wanted to smack him upside the head; on the other hand, Davey does have his own personality and quirks that are even more charming than Mickey's, imho. Anyway, I've been rambling. Bottom lines, great storytelling, great characters, go read!

Btw, this story strongly reminded me of "Duck Duck Goose" by Cole Parker. Great one. I might recommend it someday.
