i can make you feel (where this funk came from).
sehun/luhan; pg; 2090 words.
luhan's first time at a dance battle and his heart goes wub wub wub.
The floorboards of the club reverberate under the soles of their sneakers, a deep bass thrumming in the background, loud enough to rattle Luhan's sternum. The sound is crisp and clear in his ear and he fears that all he will hear for the next few days is 'wub wub wub'. It's not everyday that Luhan goes to a dance battle, in fact, he never does. But standing crammed in an ocean of bodies in a sizable club, ears buzzing and a little sweaty, he suddenly remembers why he avoids events in clubs. Or events in general.
Luhan likes silence. He likes things to be predictable and quiet and peaceful, like his usual routine every Saturday night, where he'd sit on his bed and lurk on forums, fan cafes and twitter, laugh at stupid shit on YouTube and head to bed at ungodly hours in the morning. Right here in the middle of a club, amongst baggy sweats and loose tees, Luhan feels out of place. Wub wub wub rings in his head and he feels a headache coming on.
"Jongin, I don't think I can do this." He turns to nudge his cousin in the ribs and sees the disappointment in Jongin's eyes. "It's too loud and too cramped and I just-"
"Hyunnng," he whines, dragging out the word as he always did when he wanted to get his way. "You said you'd watch me dance once you came back from Beijing. This is my first actual major, well sort of, dance battle. I'm going to go up against some really good people here, and not to brag, but I'm pretty good myself." He grins, and Luhan snorts.
"Please?" Jongin tries, sticking his lower lip out at Luhan and the older man finds himself giving in.
"Alright, ladies and gents, just 5 more minutes till we get this show on the road," the DJ's voice booms over the speakers and the music grows loud again.
The crowd comes alive, cheers and chants begin as they move to find a good spot to watch the battles from. Jongin grabs his hand excitedly, yelling something about 'wanting to introduce him to Taemin-hyung before it starts', but Luhan finds himself oddly distracted by a mop of rainbow hair sticking out above the sea of heads.
-
Jongin is good, he admits. The teenager is a fluid dancer, Luhan observes. His lanky body moves along to the rhythm easily, but his moves are sharp and precise. His cousin had danced his way up, past the top 32 and the top 16, easily breezing his way into the top 8. When Jongin comes bouncing back towards him, buzzed and hyped up, Luhan finds himself unable to do anything but smile, give his little cousin a pat on the back and hand him his bottle of water with a towel to wipe the sweat off his neck.
"How was I?" Jongin asks during the break between dance battles and Luhan gives him two thumbs up. Jongin grins from ear to ear.
The music changes and the spotlight brightens again, and the crowd instinctively turns to the center stage, where two dancers take their places at each end of the dance floor, and Luhan recognizes the rainbow haired boy.
"TOP 16! GG's Hyo versus Poppin SH! Let's make some noise!" The emcee announces, and the crowd goes wild when he places a bottle in the center, spinning it until it comes to a rest, pointing at the boy. The song changes and the crowd starts to clap along, Luhan only snapping out of his reverie when Jongin nudges his side, grinning and clapping.
"That's Poppin SH, or his nickname anyway. His real name is Oh Sehun, Taemin-hyung told me." Jongin says, eyes trained on the boy who's started to move to the center of the floor. "Rookie. Started in battles around the same time that I did, but he's pretty fucking good. The way he hits, damn."
While Jongin dances with a sort of bounce in his movements, Sehun is lazier with his choreography, but his moves are sharp and controlled, and Luhan realizes why Jongin says he's good. Sehun moves with a sort of precision and with an confident attitude, but he flows with the music, killing the beats, and Luhan is unable to tear his eyes away from him who looks almost like he's glowing under the spotlight.
When the music comes to a stop and the judges whisper amongst themselves, both poppers make their way to the center, and the emcee grabs a hold of their wrists while he waits for the verdict. Luhan hears the crowd murmur, placing bets on which would advance on and he hears Jongin whisper Sehun's name. He stares at the rainbow haired boy, who must've felt his gaze on him, because he turns to stare right back into Luhan's eyes. Flustered, Luhan turns away.
He isn't surprised when the judges announce that Sehun's moving up to the Top 8.
-
"I'm going up against Sehun. For the Top 8." Jongin tells him during the break, finishing the last of his 3rd bottle of water and Luhan wonders if he Jongin has a bladder of steel. Instead he replies with a curt 'huh', and Jongin nods, eyes focused and Luhan raises an eyebrow.
"Psyched to dance with him?" He asks, taking the empty bottle from Jongin's hand, and Jongin nods again.
"We kinda went up against each other earlier this year, during Feel the Funk. He beat me then, but he isn't doing it twice." Jongin says, muscles flexing as he practices his hits, and Luhan wishes him all the best.
He finds himself looking for Sehun again, and when he does, Sehun's already found him. There's a knowing smirk on Sehun's lips, and Luhan's heart goes thump thump thump. Or wub wub wub. He can't tell the difference anymore.
-
"TOP 8. Kai versus Poppin SH. Drop the beat, go!"
Luhan pats his cousin on the shoulder one last time before nudging him forward. The music grows louder by the second and the emcee places the bottle on the ground, spinning it. It stops, pointing at Sehun again, and he hears a soft 'yes' from Jongin. The crowd chants Sehun's name as he takes his place.
Again, Sehun's movements are not as big as Jongin's are, but he hits harder than he ever did in his previous battles, and moves with more precision and fluidity. He sees the judges nodding approvingly, and he knows Jongin's analyzing Sehun. People start clapping to the song and Luhan claps along, not missing the little tug at the corner of Sehun's lips.
Sehun's more mischievous in his choreography this time round, lightly teasing both Jongin with his moves and Luhan with his eyes. Luhan feels his legs shaking and he wonders if it's the damn music's fault. Sehun doesn't look away, even as he turns, and Luhan feels his face heating up.
"5, 4," The emcee counts down and Sehun eyes Jongin when he ends, challenging him and Jongin smiles in return. "3, 2, 1! Kai!"
Jongin is just as playful as Sehun, constantly teasing the other boy and Sehun dances at the side along with him. It's almost as if he were watching two little boys both lost in their own little world, Luhan thinks, chuckling to himself. The crowd laughs when Jongin almost forgets that the emcee is there, only snapping out of it when the countdown starts.
They dance together in the final few moments, when Jongin steps up to Sehun and Sehun follows Jongin's lead, body vibrating and moving as though Jongin were controlling him, so incredibly synchronized that the crowd goes absolutely ballistic. They end with a hug, and Jongin turns to smile at Luhan when they part. Sehun stares at Luhan from behind Jongin, his eyes forming little crescents when he grins widely. For a moment, Luhan forgets to breathe.
When the judges give their verdict, it's Jongin who moves to the top 4 this time round, and the two boys give each other friendly hugs and a last pat on the back. Jongin's basically on cloud nine when he returns, but Sehun is smiling at him as if he'd just been crowned king of the world.
-
Jongin moves on to the top 4, but he doesn't move further than that, when the judges pick "Poppin Tae" over him. Luhan tries to cheer him up when he returns, but Jongin simply shrugs, saying that Taemin-hyung deserved it, and that he had fun.
For Luhan, the remainder of the night is filled with sneaky (or not so) glances and knowing smiles, when he notices Sehun across the room. There are a million questions in Luhan's head, questions he wants to ask Sehun like 'why does your hair look like a unicorn vomited on it', 'what's wrong with your tongue' and 'are you a dream walker, because I think I saw you in my dreams last night'. He decides against it. Sehun laughs when Luhan pouts, and Luhan really wants to know how his laugh sounds.
The battle ends with Taemin winning, and Jongin runs off to congratulate him, but not before giving Luhan a pat on the butt and a cheeky grin, to which Luhan responds to with a good slap on the shoulder.
He wanders about the club, squeezing between bodies, but Sehun's nowhere to be found, leaving Luhan disappointed.
His legs are tired, his shirt is half soaked with sweat, and all he really wants to do is go home and watch cat videos. Luhan glances down at his watch and finds that it's already late, and he sighs.
He turns to find Jongin, but a hand latches onto his wrist and Luhan looks up and sees none other than Sehun, his face barely inches from Luhan's. Sehun tugs Luhan a little closer, a warm hand pressing against the small of his back while another slips a little piece of paper into Luhan's own hand, now clammy with sweat.
Sehun's so close that Luhan can smell him- he smells like sweat and musky cologne, and Luhan thinks that he could get used to it. He's snapped out of his trance though when he hears Sehun chuckling, lips just barely grazing the shell of his ear and Luhan's pretty damn sure his heart might stop.
"Taemin may have won tonight," He starts, voice low. "But I think that you have the moves like Jagger."
When he pulls back, Luhan wonders if it's just the light, or if Sehun's face is just that red. He doesn't get to respond because Sehun presses a soft kiss to his cheek before slipping into the crowd again, leaving Luhan dazed and flustered.
-
For the rest of the following week, Luhan remains in the same state as he had been when Sehun had left him in the club.
He ignores Jongin's teases whenever the younger boy comes by his house to hog his Playstation to play The Last of Us, and punches Yixing and Minseok whenever they pretend to be Sehun and himself, making kissy faces googly eyes at each other (stupid Jongin's fault).
It's only when his hands are fumbling around in the pockets of his jeans for spare change that he remembers the little piece of paper Sehun had slipped him that night, and with nimble fingers he unfolds the crumpled note. He finds Sehun's number (or at least he thinks it is) messily scrawled across the center, and a smiley face drawn at the side that was later scribbled over.
He contemplates for a minute, fingers itching for his phone.

Luhan likes silence. He likes things to be predictable and quiet and peaceful, like his usual routine every Saturday night, when Sehun comes over to his apartment and they laugh and stuff their face with pizza over a movie or a rerun, roll around on Luhan's bed and kiss in the dark, fingers roaming over naked skin.
Luhan finds that he also likes the thump thump thump of the floorboards under his feet when he goes with Sehun and Jongin to their dance battles. He likes it when the crowd cheers for Sehun and likes it when Sehun hugs him after he moves onto the next round, and the kisses they share between.
He decides that he also likes the the way his heart goes wub wub wub for Sehun. (And Jongin's disgusted face when he catches them making out in a corner.)
