AO3 Meme

Jun 11, 2023 13:35

I've been meaning to post something - anything - for a while now, but I haven't had the motivation, partly because things have been stressy and partly because all I ever seem to do on my journal nowadays is whine. So, when this meme from lurking_latinist showed up on my feed, I thought it would be a great first start.

Note, I haven't actually written regularly in a long time. Maybe this will kick me in the butt.

1. How many works do you have on Ao3?

140.

2. What’s your total Ao3 word count?

665,779.

3. How many fandoms have you written for?

Main: Doctor Who (2005, 1963, RPF, Big Finish), Gallifrey, Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood, Good Omens, British Actor RPF, Harry Potter, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (doesn't really count - it was a joke posting I wrote for my husband)

Only by dint of crossovers: Broadchurch, Casanova, Firefly, Forever Knight, NieR Replicant, The Sandman

4. Top 5 fics by kudos?

The Actor - 373
Mistaken Identity - 170
Blue Rain -159
"Bloody Doctors!" - 130
"A Meeting of Minds" - 99

The first two have a lot of hits simply due to being my oldest fics - they've just had more time to rack up hits despite the bad writing (omg I need to rewrite them). The Actor also is very lonely in its niche, so it got a lot of attention - it's a "David Tennant gets to travel with the Doctor" fic, of which there are surprisingly few considering how many people love the concept. So, you know, kudos simply for being rather unique. Blue Rain got a lot of attention because I dedicated it to bas_math_girl so her fanbase came over to check it out. Otherwise, I would expect those three fics would have had very little traffic at all. Mistaken Identity is especially weird considering that none of the popular HP characters are in it. No idea why "Bloody Doctors!" got so much attention.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why/why not?

Yes, I try to respond to every comment, because I really appreciate it when people take the time to reach out, but I have to admit I've been very lax in the past two years, due to life issues and lack of enthusiasm.

6. A fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Hm. I don't know. Maybe The Actor?

7. Do you write crossovers?

Absolutely! One of my favorite writing activities is to mix the two IPs together so that it all fits, so that the reader comes away thinking that yes, that could possibly have happened in canon. Mistaken Identity was especially fun, because it happens the summer after Goblet of Fire and lets you imagine that the Doctor got involved - met Dumbledore, met Voldemort, etc. - without leaving a trace.

8. Ever received hate on a fic?

No. I've also received very little criticism, constructive or otherwise, which is disappointing.

9, Do you write smut?

I have, a Blue Rain extra for bas_math_girl, but otherwise I don't. I'm pretty terrible at it.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I've had fics being included on those sites that popup that are claiming to be archives of ff.net. Otherwise, not that I know of.

11. Ever had a fic translated?

Yes, and it's awesome. The Actor was partially translated into German (I think that's on ff.net) and into Russian on the Russian fanfic website. It and some of its related works have been translated into Chinese here on AO3.

12. Have you ever co-written a fic?

No. (My husband protests this answer. He gives me ideas and talks through things with me, so I guess yes, he's my co-writer. However, he does not write (either actually type any written prose or suggest wording or style).)

13. All time fav ship?

None. I don't view characters in terms of their romantic relationships. I read Ten/Donna fics because I enjoy the interactions between the two characters, but I don't ship them.

14. WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I only have one WIP posted on AO3, "To Reason Why", which is about General Cobb (or Private Cobb in the story) from "The Doctor's Daughter". I never post stories that aren't finished, but had to do this one because it was for a ficathon and I hit the deadline - it was meant to be a three-chapter story, but the first chapter could stand alone, so I posted only that. The second chapter was actually done at the time of the ficathon, but I doubt I'll ever finish the third. Maybe I should post that second chapter.

15. Writing strengths?

Probably action and plot. I can write reasonable adventures.

16. Writing weaknesses?

Character! I'm pretty good with characterizing known characters (which is why I stick with fanfic and not origfic!) but I cannot design compelling characters. I'm also poor at emotion, which is why I have no interest in subjects/tropes like hurt/comfort, romance, etc.

17. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

If you don't speak the language fluently, find someone to write/translate the dialogue for you. It's important to limit the amount of foreign dialogue as well. If your characters are saying a couple of sentences, that's fine, but if they're having a whole conversation in another language, I have to wonder, why include it at all?

18. First fandom you wrote for?

Doctor Who. All of this fanfic stuff started in 2013 when I saw my first DW episode and fell headlong into the fandom.

19. What’s your fav fic you’ve written so far?

Um, I can't pick. I love certain ones for different reasons.

Blue Rain: I'm pleased with how well this was plotted out.
"Every Mirror": This was a major departure from my usual style and I think it came out pretty good.
"Falling and Rising", "Ill-Fitted": I love writing about minor characters, filling in their backstories, and I think these came out well.
"One Soldier's Story": Lots of reasons - the story is about the original character, Peri is awesome, the Doctor is seen but not heard. :)
"Legends and Lies": One of the few stories I've written based on theme rather than plot. It almost won Big Finish's Paul Spragg contest - they decided not to choose it because they already had an audio with a similar theme being produced. I especially loved working in the oral tradition style.
"Sam's New Year": It's not often you get to work with almost all the Doctors in one story.
Journey of a Lifetime: Another story about an original character, which had to be woven into the Tenth Doctor's timeline. Probably not my best work, but I really enjoyed developing the concept and the character.
The Substitute Bride, "A Journal of Possible Things": Favorites simply because of the sheer amount of research and time-wrangling I had to do to plot them out. I love research and fitting things into canon.
"The Woman Who Didn't": I'm just posting this here because it lets me mention the audio "Peri and the Piscon Paradox" and urge everyone to go listen to it. It's awesome. Also, I loved trying to match the style of the audio narration here.
