This is not exactly the Sunday afternoon I had in mind for this weekend. I got my covid booster shot yesterday, and while I'm not feeling much effect from it, I really just kind of ache, so I'm sitting here doing not much of anything. I am definitely glad to have gotten it, though. My husband scheduled me for it. He's not happy that I'm going to band rehearsal once a week and am planning to join the concert band in the fall, so making sure that I get the booster shot is easing his worries a bit. He'd like to get one as well, but he's below the minimum age to qualify for the booster. Punk. I'm not sure if I'm happy that I could get the booster or mortified that I'm above the age restriction.
Anyway, so I'm sitting here trying to figure out a comfortable position to sit in. I've been playing a lot of Stardew Valley, but I'm now kind of sick of it. What I really should do is open a Google doc and write a story. I should. But no, I'm sitting here, stream-of-consciousnessing into the ether.
Work has been going pretty well. Remember I said a month ago that the client company reorged into business units (BUs) and that our BU is the only one hitting its deadlines? Well, that's still true. There's a deadline at the end of this week that the entire company is supposed to hit, and we're the only ones who will. We're doing so well that the client company has taken our leader and told him to go work on the other BUs and get them to work faster. Of course, that's not what our leader did with us (he organized his BU and set reasonable goals, and provided the support that we needed to reach those goals), but the client company only knows how to do one thing: yell at people.
I did finally do something that I've been wanting to do for about four years now, and that is replace my French horn. When I started learning horn, I rented a single horn to start, then purchased a used Conn 6D after a few months. The 6D is a good instrument, but this one was rather beat up and is fifty years old now. After a couple of years (which established for both me and my husband that I was serious about sticking with horn), I started talking about replacing it, and even went so far as to try a couple of Yamahas at the local store. However, it's a fairly expensive instrument (though not nearly as bad as a bassoon - a decent bassoon will set you back over ten grand) and neither of us felt good about spending for it.
Then the pandemic hit, and since our jobs were not endangered by it, our expenses dropped precipitously: no eating out, no social engagements, no traveling, minimal gas expenditures (only enough to get to the grocery story once a week). Though we knew we were spending a lot less, it really didn't hit us until this year, and my husband decided that while we certainly don't need to go spend frivolously, we shouldn't hesitate to spend on things we really need, and he mentioned that I'd wanted to get a new horn, so now was the time.
And it's awesome. I got myself a Holton 378, which is an intermediate level horn, and the first thing I noticed was that it had less air resistance and a much nicer sound than my Conn. The Conn always had this kind of fuzzy sound, but the Holton is clear, and the sound projects a lot better. You can tell I like the horn because I'm actually taking the time to practice on my own.
But not today. My arm hurts too much from the jab to carry a horn around. So, I think I'll just sit back and nap.
