if the summer rain didn't already have me riled, the flies that appeared all over the place after the rain today do. i had to wash my hair when i got home just a bit ago cause i was scared those bastards made homes of my scalp. yik.
so glenna says, i will do. her thing:
basically, write out 7 songs you are into no matter what, no matter how cool they are, just 7 songs you cant get enough of, then tag 7 other ppl.
as my friends typically aren't as nerdy or bored as i am, i will not tag. i can't bear the shame of nonresponse.
i like 7. it's been a while for reviewing. check the pretense.
1. Chemical Brothers - "Out Of Control"
i initially missed over this song multiple times when listening to surrender. it starts with the typical house techno beat you'd expect from a chem bros song. i figured it'd spiral endlessly into annoying repetition. not quite the truth however. vocals add so much to the bros' songs. bernard sumner of new order/joy division sounds right at home. maybe it reminds me too much of an electronic song that never happened. either way, it's tailor made for the club. dancey!
2. Spac Hand Luke - "Psycho"
as the name would imply, the song stands on the strings of the like-titled movie. it's another installment into luke vibert's ever expanding arsenal of sounds and styles. i can't give him too much credit though, as one could surely label his take on the tune as little more than a slightly adjusted, instrumental busta rhymes mix. it's still fresh though. the production is tops and oh, the many handclaps. love it.
3. M Coast - "Out of the Water"
okay so why love a song when the first impression reminds you of a stage in sonic the hedgehog 2? i don't know. it's just great. two of montreal ex-members (andy & derek) and their wives comprise the newly renamed M Coast. this song's as good as anything i've heard from OM in years. the vocals are rich and beautiful. it's a bit edgy, but sweet all the same. i can't wait for the album. if i had money, i'd buy it first chance.
4. Bad Veins - "I Shut My Heart Down"
ben's a local cincinnati guy left solo after the break of the giant judys. this track is of the sweet electronic variety (possibly read postal servicesque). the production is pretty rough and i'm not too fond of the vocal treatments, but the instrumentation and sound are as heartfelt and touching as anything found making waves in the mainstream underground right now. it's wonderful feeling down music. whether you're joyed or mopey, it's fit for a cry. watch for the guitar toward the end. ah, so powerful.
5. Flin Flon - "Darlings"
protest music, but not necessarily the bush bashing kind. it's empowering to a point as the chorus chants, "we can fight the power." the guitar is played really choppy and strange, but it works within the song. the drums and bass really set the foundation. it's great for yelling about. "please don't surrender."
6. John Vanderslice - "Trace Manual"
there's not much i want to say about this. i'm not much a fan of what i've heard of Vanderslice, but this one caught me. it's soft, but dark. it feels like i should be walking down an empty city block in winter. the lyrics don't really agree, but the voice makes up for it. it's uneasy. the strings are just it.
7. +/- - "Steal the Blueprints"
if teenbeat would release this record already so i'd have some other way to hear this beside the video. i can't really describe it. it's got just what i love about good, abnormal rock music.
here, just watch and learn:
Steal the Blueprints that was too much for too little. thanks gff.
