bizarre

A few weeks ago I heard about a DC area judge who was suing a mom and pop dry cleaners for losing his favorite pair of pants. Thing is, he was suing for $65 million. I figured the story would fade away, and the judge was just doing it for some weird publicity reasons. Also, I heard that they actually *found* his pants, and returned them.

Anyway, I was walking past the DC courthouse today and saw a ton of different news vans and wondered what was going on. Turns out the case is moving forward, and it went to trial today. Apparently the judge (the one that is suing) had a little change of heart and is now only suing for $54 million. He is acting as his own lawyer and called multiple witnesses to the stand, one of which mocked the dry cleaner owners by using what was described as a "vivid Asian accent." Then, get this, a wheelchair-bound 89 year old WWII veteran was wheeled in to describe how the cleaners had ruined a pair of her suit-pants, and proceeded to compare the dry cleaners to nazis (she was very upset about the suit-pants and kept thinking about what "Hitler did to thousands of Jews"). The suing judge even called to the stand his own son, the salesman at Nordstrom who sold him the suit, and one of his fellow judges. He then called himself to the stand, and proceeded to break down into tears when describing his lost pants, and was forced to take a five minute break. After 8 hours, the first day of trial was finished. Lets see what happens tomorrow.
