Gerry Studds, who was the first openly gay person to be elected to congress, recently died. He represented the Cape Cod area in congress for 25 years. However, his husband (they were legally married in their state of Massachusetts in 2004) will not receive any pension benefits. If Studds were married to a woman instead, she would recieve an estimated $62,000 a year from Studd's pension program. Instead, his husband receives nothing.
Even congressmen who are convicted felons still receive pensions. Apparently marrying a man is worse than being a felon.
