Last Friday night, Deepa and I had been to an
Arena Football
game. It was the first time we had been to a stadium to watch a game
(in the US). Boy, was it fun? So what is the Arena Football? It is
smaller version of Football (not to be confused with soccer !?!).
Football = American Football (duh!). This Arena Football is held
indoors and the ground is of much smaller size(in comparision to normal
Football). Our local team (The San Jose Sabercats) were playing the
Nashville Kats. It was a very close game and in the final seconds our
team had a chance to do a touchdown and win the game. But sadly we
didnt convert and lost the game 57-55. Later in office I found out that
this was very close by Arena Football standards. Now this Arena
football seems to be getting really popular among kids. Think of this
game as what
Twenty20 is
to cricket. For those who havent heard of Twenty20, this is the new
version of cricket that is being sold to the public in England. There
is also a league for it and if I remember right couple of months back
Australia and New Zealand played the first ever Twenty20 international.
All in all Arena football was fun with us showing more interest in the
Saberkittens (the cheer-girls for your team) and the other
entertainments during the break. Since we had got the tickets from our
office, we were given the penthouse suites where we could relax with
food and drink ;). Hoping to do more such games in the near
future.
Where the mind is filled with cheer-girls
And the head is inside a helmet
Where jostling is free
Where the scoreboard is not broken up
Into fragments of mind boggling statistics (like cricket)
Where the words "Make some noise" ring out of the speakers
Where tireless shouting
Stretches the vocal chords
Where the clear stream of beer
Has not lost its sway
On the dreary cans of Coke
Where the hind is bent forward in glee
Towards the ever shortening arena of players in action
Into that heaven of Arena Football
My referee, I saw this country awake.
I sincerely hope this piece is not taken as a sign of degrading
Tagore's wonderful poem. Its just an innocent attempt to narrate a
light hearted moment in a different way.
