I don't know why I'm so addicted to JKR's Potter books. I mean, really, no REALLY you have to admit they're not SERIOUS works of fiction like Donaldson, Bradbury or Martin (or insert your favorite "serious" author here). Of course, I was introduced, as many were, to her works via the movies. I didn't even start reading the book series till the third movie was out. After that, though, I bought all six (Thank you, Sci-Fi bookclub!) and devoured them in a non stop reading frenzy.
Pity the author is a clueless bitch who changed her writing style and direction in the middle of the series and, basically, screwed them up. The 5th book was iffy at best, and the 6th book, well, stunk. I'm almost afraid for the 7th book to come out.
I'm sure I would be smacked for saying that, but it's true (in my opinion.). I'm a good enough writer that I can tell when a story has changed suddenly in a direction it wasn't going. Ideas laid out in the first four books suddenly vanished or were altered in the 5th -- or maybe that was her intent all along? If so, I must say her success is based more on luck and marketing savy then her writing skills.
Still . . . the whole Potter phenomonen is a delicious one, and no doubt will always be regarded as crack.
