ETA: AL GORE WAS ON MY CAMPUS ON MONDAY??????????????????????????????????????????????
11th Grade 2005-2006 = my controversial magnet program walked us through racism, classism, and sexism
November 4, 2008 = America elected it's first nonwhite president.
January-??? 2009 = Race Fail '09 on LJ in the sci-fi/fantasy community
Sometime between November and right now = the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender live action movie is announced...and they're all white.
Just found out = Dev Patel takes Jesse McCartney's place for the role of Prince Zuko???? (

Remembered reading about = Jackson Rathbone said of his (Inuit) character Sokka: I think it's one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan. It's one of those things where, hopefully, the audience will suspend disbelief a little bit. (

Wouldn't that basically be like going blackface?

Oh, and let's not forget what Eric Holder said about race.
Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot salad bowl, in things racial we have always been and I believe continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards. ~ Eric Holder, Attorney General (strikethrough and italics are mine) (

Sometimes I feel that we get too worked up over race and we should back off a bit. And then I see stupid shit like this get pulled, and it just...as a Korean and a member of the minority in America I think this is disgusting and sick and vile and I don't think recasting the character of Prince Zuko is going to convince me to watch the movie. No offense to Patel but Zuko is (to me) an amalgamation of Chinese and Japanese cultures, and is a representative of it therefore, in my humble opinion, they should've cast Zuko as either Chinese or Japanese or, if they're lucky, Chinese/Japanese. Heck, I would give them a bit of leeway if they went Korean or some ethnic combination, but really? Recast as Indian? Fuck, Aang would have made a bit more sense recast as Indian (although that's never going to happen, judging by the actual cartoon).
In conclusion: It is never wrong to talk too much about race and racism. Just don't let it eat you alive.
Oh goody, it's a Linkin Park DayPi Day! (thanks for the reminder,

In other news, I took a 2 hour nap from 5-7PM...and woke up at 7:38AM. Barry is apparently so happy with his current life that he's building an awesome bubble nest in a corner of the tank, and according to Neil Gaiman's Twitter he's going to appear on The Colbert Report this coming Monday. O RLY? YA RLY! NO WAI!
