In my humblest opinion the best movies are the ones that you find you want to watch again and again and again. They are the ones that fill you with glee and joy every time you watch. They are the ones that you find you can't stop talking about. They're the ones that make your brain goSo. Fun story

My issue with the way Uhura was portrayed in the trailer is that anyone who hasn't seen XI or TOS would get very little indication about her character outside of her relationship with Spock. She's portrayed suiting him up, kissing him, worrying about him, but other than that new viewers get very little else about her personality especially when compared to the other characters. Even the work she does in the trailer is in the background while ALL of the guys, even Scotty who is really just there to make faces at the fish, are in the forefront. That really bothers me.
It does a huge disservice to her because, like you said, she would never allow herself to be forced into being just the girlfriend and her role as a WOC on the bridge crew and being shown as being desirable AND highly competent smashes so much racist/sexist shit that it is fabulous. But the trailer TRIES to portray her as The Girlfriend and that is disappointing. If I knew nothing about her character when I sat down to watch that preview, I would walk out with the impression that she was Spock's girlfriend who also works on the ship. Her importance is really downplayed and I feel like anyone not familiar with her would have a radically different interpretation of her character from that preview than what you and I would.

I think I'll let the audience decide if they want to bother catching up on Star Trek before May 17. Maybe I'm just too tired right now to really think about it but I don't care to worry about how the audience might see her based on the clip. It's not my job.
