Except Tree With Deep Roots (and Taejo Wang Guhn). I recommend the shit out of this drama, and that's something you never, ever hear coming out of my mouth (and fingers).
That moment when you watch three episodes of Tree With Deep Roots in a row and give no fucks about it being 3:46AM on a Monday. Holy shit I love this drama. Curve balls everywhere. Academia + political intrigue + mystery! An academic king who actually gives a shit about the common people! A vengeful palace guard who goes in over his head with all this politicial shit involving the Hidden Root organization! Creating the Korean phonetic alphabet! Some Chinese translator who's involved in this mess for some reason! A whole district where you can literally trust no one! A butcher who's really not a butcher because he's great at autopsy but really he's not really a butcher. Elders vs. youngsters! Court officials vs. scholars! The epic subtle love story of Yido the king and Moohyul his swordsman... okay, I kid. But seriously - I ship them. I ship them hard. Yido's like some freaky ass almagamation of K. Flynn/Sam F./Dean W. Creative, temperamental, easygoing, cusser, has major daddy issues, but not that I can blame him; his dad was an asshole of the highest order. Moohyul, who drew his sword against the old king to protect his charge, is like...Tron. Seriously. I just. a;lskfja;sljkdfl;askdjfl;aksjdfl;kajfasjdf
Oh yeah, there's that whole Chae Yoon the vengeful palace guard and So Yi the mute court lady whose arrogance cost her her family, Chae Yoon, and her voice romance but who cares. I need Yido bouncing around here and there, and Moohyul following after him going, "JFC."
Oh yeah, and that scene where Yido asked Chae Yoon if he could read fear in people while Moohyul stood five feet away, and then after when Yido (playfully) scolded him for being so far away while he conversed with the palace guard who wants to kill him. "Next time, be only three feet from me."
I CAN'T.
