Make of it what you will (fate, coincidence, etc.), but as I was driving into town to buy something Redskins related to wear to the game tomorrow, I saw a guy drive by in an SW20 (2nd gen MR2, same as the car I just bought.) Had a body kit, unpainted, looked like a general work-in-progress. WVU stickers in the windows, so I figured he's around my age.
So I say to myself: "Self, I should follow that guy and see if I pull up next to him at a light or wherever he goes, just ask him what year it is, what body kit, or something." Followed him a while, then realized my gas light was on. Dagger. Finally got to the light on 28 at Liberia and pulled into the Exxon to get gas. Figured I may never see this guy again. He's sitting at the light, in clear view, for a while, and I keep thinking I should run over and say something before the light turns green. But I let him go; seems to me that'd be kind of weird. Light turns green, he drives off. I finish filling the tank and decide to head over to the bank and get some cash for shopping.
I pull into the bank parking lot, and what car is parked there? Exactly. His SW20.
At this point it's obvious to me I'm supposed to talk to him. Waited for him to come out of the bank and caught his attention, told him I'd just bought one and was actually following him, dropped the idea, then ran into him there and knew I had to talk to him. Kid's name is James, senior at Osbourn and is going to WVU next year. The car is a 91, automatic, 5S-FE, sunroof-all exactly like mine. Talked for a while, found out some good info from him about a guy who knows MR2s, plus about a couple others around the area. He didn't think it odd at all that I was tracking him down; he actually said he'd followed another guy in one before. It's a car thing. People that own them just understand.
So, now I've got another MR2 link in the area. Kind of a cool day, I'd say.
