Stop the presses, this just in: college is sometimes really a lot of fun!

Today I have survived giving a class presentation that had all the makings of a disaster, ranging from a mass of technological failures on both my part and my partners', to the fact that I compiled my part basically last night, you know, instead of sleeping. I was flailing about my fail and nervousness to the other fourteen people taking the class, and they were all supportive and hilarious and intelligent and made impending doom more funny than devastating. And, hey, it wasn't a disaster, we could work around tech fail, we got so excited about our topic that we went overtime and people wanted to ask questions regardless. I had fun talking in front of people in a semi-formal setting! How awesome is that?

I think a big part of why I like this class so much, despite the occasional awkward, rambling lecture from Prof Tom, is that the people taking it are mostly exchange students--they're wired differently from people who are in their home universities or something, I swear. The other part is that it's such a small group, it's much easier to connect to people when there's actual opportunity for discussion. I'll be bummed when the class is done with next week.

My other Thursday class is a really basic and relaxed English conversation group. It doesn't really matter what we were supposed to be talking about, but somehow we ended up on actors who lost their moment of being the next big thing. And then there was this exchange between me and our fierce teacher, Gordon, who I heart dearly.

HIM: I just want to test something here. *writes something on the whiteboard*
ME, thinking: I-O-A- WTF, why does he even know who Ioan Gruffudd is?
ME, aloud: *universally recognized sound of fangirl joy* He's awesome!
HIM: You've heard of him?
ME: Yes! I'm totally a fan!
HIM: You really know who that is?
ME: Yes!
HIM: Oh! Well, he's a relative of mine.
And then he made a vague and a little sad comment about how going to Hollywood didn't really work out for Ioan, and really, I am not even sure what all that was about but I think the moral of the story is not to out yourself as a fan of someone before the mundie who brought this person up explains why they did.

Aaaaand yeah, got to run, meeting
cimorene for shopping. Double whammy: fun, and it'll keep me awake so I don't nap the entire evening and then wake up midnight-ish!
