Picked up several things on Saturday, since I was off that day.
First up, we have 21st Century Toys:
AH-1W Super Cobra:
This is a 1/18th scale replica of the Marine gunship. 21st Century did a fantastic job on the detailing of this venerable helicopter. From the cool grey paint application to the large “striking cobra” on either side of the fuselage, the Super Cobra looks super realistic. Antennas and lights are in the proper place, with all panels clearly shown. The
tandem cockpit is richly detailed, with clear depictions of the various instruments and control surfaces.
The
chin turret can pivot to the right and to the left, as can the sensor mounted in the nose. The
Winglets feature missile and rocket pods that can detach. The
cockpit features twin opening hatches on either side and both engines feature
opening doors to reveal the internal arrangement of the engines. Two hatches open on either side of the chin turret, allowing access to the gun components and a storage bin.
Sold now through Wal*Mart’s Motorworks line, the Super Cobra sells for $39.99, which is considerably cheaper than what Toys “R” Us would have sold this for had they not stopped carrying 21st Century stuff. It comes with one figure, though oddly, it’s a Special Forces soldier, not a pilot, but the Super Cobra fits G.I. Joe Vs. Cobra figures easily and I have my custom Wild Bill piloting it. Which makes sense as the classic G.I. Joe helicopter XH-1 Dragonfly is based on the AH-1 Cobra, which was the precursor to the newer Super Cobra. All in all, very worth the $40.
Next we have two Star Wars vehicles(really the first two major vehicles I’ve ever purchased since Kenner released the first vehicle back in the 70s.). We have the
Anakin Skywalker’s Custom Jedi Starfighter: and the
A-Wing Starfighter.
The Anakin Jedi Starfighter is a modification of the Episode II Jedi Starfighter made for the cartoon serial “The Clone Wars”. It features two large hyperdrive units mounted under the nose of the craft, looking reminiscent of Anakin’s Podracer from Episode I. Other changes include, variable geometry wings, “X-Wing-esque” weapon arrangement on the wings, a new droid location, a missle launcher on the center line of the craft and a variable position thruster in the rear. This is on top of the Clone Wars blue paint scheme the vehicles have recieved. It holds one figure, though not the Anakin Skywalker Clone War figure for which it is intended. Overall, not a bad looking starfighter, if for an odd appearance with the large engines on the front. Sold for $20, it does not come with a figure, so not as much of a bargain like the next reviewed item...
The A-Wing, as seen in Return of the Jedi, is a classic re-release, since it seems to at one time featured light up rear engine exhaust, though not now. It’s a small fighter, so not much room for detail, though it is there. A single pilot can fit in the cockpit and the cockpit can be raised or lowered by a button to the rear of it. The laser turrets can pivot in a 360 degree arc and the landing gear can be lowered or raised by using a lever on the underside of the fighter. Paint detail shows a fighter that has been heavily used and not cleaned once, since it is coated in dirt, which was the hallmark of all Rebel equipment. Sold for $20 at Target, it comes with one pilot figure with removable helmet. A pretty cool looking piece of Star Wars tech.
Lastly, we have the oddity of the group...
The Car. This creepy looking automobile terrorized people in a small southwestern town in the 1977 movie “The Car” starring James Brolin. Obviously a custom design, made to appear like nothing on the road, Ertl/Racing Champions recreated that rather scary looking auto in 1/18 die-cast form. It features an opening hood, trunk and doors(to show there is no driver, natch). It is very faithful to the design in the movie, with chunky black tires, big chrome bumpers and wheels, and dark amber tinted windows that appear black. For $25, it’s not for everyone, of course, but if you like cars and liked the movie, it’s something that would be neat to own.
