My mom and I went to Letterman yesterday...got "VIP" seats in the balcony which turned out to be not so great because I had to crane my neck to see everything (the cameras got in the way). Plus it was fucking freezing (Shirley was right about that) and my neck and back went stiff. Shirley looked amazing....much better than what you guys saw on TV (the lighting in that studio is weird) and while the song sounded pretty good in the studio, it felt kind of pitchy, but later when I saw it on TV, it sounded really good. I noticed the same thing with the show's orchestra. The audience was kind of made up of middle aged tourists, so I thought Garbage might be wasted on them...I wasn't really wrong...I thought they gave a good response in cheers, not amazing though (though again, it actually sounded louder on TV than I realized in the studio). They were on too quickly though. I was really hoping for an interview but they whisked away almost immediately...Shirley was cute though...after they played and off camera she was dancing to the Paul Shaffer Orchestra's music. The band seemed to be having a good time.
I saw LittleShirley78 (the Shirley wannabe) and her friend there...she sat behind me in the balcony seats. Later, we went outside to meet the band and there were about 50 other people...some fans, some paparazzi, and some random tourists. There also was a Weezer concert at the Roseland, and the line wrapped around to the back of the venue, directly across the street from the David Letterman's side entrance. So they were interested in watching them come out, too. Finally they did. Duke came out first, and we called to him and he came over, and seemed to recognize me...he was like "what are you doing here?" (jokingly) and he gave me a hug and then he took another picture with me. He's really great. Butch came out next but didn't stop for any signings or pictures...I called to him and waved to him and he turned around but then he went into the van. Shirley came out at the same time and everyone started calling to her and a bunch of people from the Weezer line crossed over and started to swarm from the other side, but as usual, Shirley didn't stop. She kind of surveyed the crowd and smiled at us, but we didn't make eye contact this time unfortunately, or maybe we did, but briefly. My mom actually was right next to her as she walked by. Anyway, a bunch of people were shouting "Shirley, can I have a picture? Shirley, can you sign this?" and she said "I'm sorry, sweetie, but I have my hands full." and she climbed into their van. Steve somehow snuck by...I didn't even see him. So compared to how willing and down to earth Duke was, Shirley seemed kind of divaesque, but I realized she actually DID have her hands full, carrying something. And I know she actually IS really nice and down to earth, but in these situations she has to kind of blow people off, or everyone would swarm her even worse. She looked even more amazing outside than in the studio. Cameras don't do her justice.
So it was all over then after that and I was little bummed. My Garbage month is officially over (since Y100's show was cancelled)...4 events: Philly, NYC concert (where I met Duke & Butch and gave Shirley the boa), Fuse (where I interviewed the band, despite it being cut off on TV, and Shirley remembered me and talked to me and I was elated), and now Letterman. It kind of sucked seeing my favorite band in a general audience, as opposed to a Garbage one, but what can you do? Hopefully a lot of people saw it last night and it will boost album sales.
All in all, good times.
This wasn't a very coherent review, but I'm exhausted as hell...we had some major train problems getting home and we didn't get here until almost 10pm.
P.S.
I forgot to mention...when we checked in with our tickets around 3:30, we heard the band rehearsing BLM...like 5 times. That was cool. My mom really thinks Shirley is beautiful in person. And I agree...even though I've seen her upclose several times now, both onstage and off, it always amazes me how stunning she truly is. I'm glad my mom finally got to see the band I have been obsessed with for 7 years.
