tutorial // texture abstractly

Hello! New tutorial today? Thought I'd give you another one, show you how I made an icon that may help of inspire to you to try your own.

We'll be making this icon:

The point of this tutorial is to show you no matter how abstract the texture, using it right can create great results.

This tutorial was made with Adobe Photoshop CS3 but you can probably incorporate it into other programs.

Starting off, I'm really into Dong Youngbae (aka. Taeyang from Big Bang) at the moment after purchasing his solo album. I took his video 'Naman Barabwa' and took a few caps of scenes to get my starting image. In this case, I used this cap.

As usual, I resize, cropped and played around with this image until I got my base image.

Please note that each layer is down in order so each new part will be on top of the last. Please also note that depending on certain textures you use and the colours featured on them, this tutorial may not work if you try to copy it using your own choice of texture. Please use it more for refferance.

Once I have my base, it was time to start. The first step is to duplicate the base and Soft Light it.

Next, duplicate it again and blend it to Screen this time.

Next step, we want to make the dark patches stand out more. So it's off to New Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Colour. Select the Colours option to black and put +15 in all the boxes. Makes sure Method is set to relative.

Let's get the textures in. Take this texture by sanami276 and set it to Soft Light.

Next up, take this texture once again by sanami276 and set it to Lighter Colour.

Yet again, another sanami276 texture, set it to Darker Colour.

Duplicate the base and set it to Lighten.

Once again, a sanami276 texture, set it to Soft light.

Now, take this scribble texture made by kf_creations and position it to the right and set it to Lighten.

To decorate the picture and define the text, take this pattern texture by sanami276, resize it (I did about 50px by 50px) and crop one line of dots. Place it under the text and duplicate the layer to get more to cover the whole row. See the images below for assistance. Set this layer to Multiply.

Finally, take another pattern texture by sanami276 and crop it to how you see fit and set it to Darken to get the final result.

I hope this has helped in some way and if you have any questions, please ask. If you attempt the tutorial, or use it to create any icons, I'd love to see any example. Thanks once again.
