Newer isn't always better

What on earth is going on with electric heating pads? One I loved for years finally stopped working, and I've been trying to replace it. After buying and returning four different ones in the past week, I've come to the conclusion that heating pads aren't allowed to get HOT anymore! All four of them got vaguely warm, but not hot. Blast, I want my old one back. Does anyone know of a brand (electric) that actually gets hot?
