Since many have asked...

Last halloween I was on neopets trick-or-treating with my pet MrsMinx when my computer froze up. The only thing I could do was unplug the machine and reboot. Nothing happened. The computer was dead.

It's not as if I wasn't warned several times...some vague murmurings about a fatal error and to back up the hard drive. Of course I just ignored them.

So the first person I called was a computer-wiz friend. "What version are you running?" "Windows Millenium." "Oh, that'll be a problem." The guy was no help at all. Then I tried running those restore disks. No luck. The CD drive didn't even know there was a disk in there.

After that, I went to Best Buy and grabbed one of those skinny greasy-long-haired Geek Squad guys. "What version were you running?" "Windows ME." "That was your first mistake." (Lots of sarcasm, nasty glint in the eyes.) Imagine the audacity of that little bastard. "I've used Win ME for the past 6 years without a single problem." Actually what I wanted to do was grab the jerk by the throat and shake him like a bunny until he was dead.

So, because resurrecting my computer was going to be impossible, the Geek showed me some new computers. I liked several of them, and was told that they came with free vista after the first of the year when Vista would be released. Unfortunately, some of the computers would need major upgrades to run Vista. And knowing my luck with computers, I would have to pay a Geek to do the installation. It just didn't seem cost effective to me so I decided to wait until after the first of the year.

Good thing. The blower went out in my car. Imagine driving 20 miles to work with the entire windshield frosted up except for a tiny handprint to see through. That cost me about $320 and took up most of my computer savings.

Anyway, what did I lose?

Several thousand recipes. I had just installed mastercook and entered in family recipes and those I'd downloaded from the web. I do have hardcopies of the family recipies but the new ones are gone with the wind.

All my email addresses. If anyone wants me to write to them, they'll have to write to me first because I've lost everyone.

Hundreds of crochet patterns, both bookmarked and paid for. The ones I paid for hurt the most. Ugh.

And of course the snail-mail addys of those people who were part of my x-mas card exchange. My apologies.

So here I am. Starting over.
