Jun leaned against the bar and watched the terrain go by. The jeep's passage kicked up dust. Every once in a while, Jun would take a sip of water from her thermos and wet her tongue. She saw scrub, cacti, and various rocks that she idly catalogued. Almost, she asked Derek to stop so she could take something interesting home with her. In the ( Read more... )

Derek nodded, watching Jun take off up the walkway. He got out, going around to the back of the Jeep himself and getting geared up. Holster and gun, sheath attached to the back of his jacket, stakes in their ready-made pockets on the inside of his jacket ( ... )

Jun scraped together most of the guard's head and squirted it with flaming agent. There was a spark, a flash, and it was burning in the heat of the sun.

She observed a moment of silence, then went in search of the heart.

Derek laid aside Jun's share of the equipment as he watched her take care of the guard's head. He joined her in silence for a moment before starting to move through the area, picking up what he could of the guard's other remains ( ... )

The thing about vampire reek, besides the taste, was that once one got used to it, it gave one a working idea of what she might expect in terms of numbers. They left the heat for the cold, reeky dimness of the cave. Jun held out her flashlight and turned it on.

Footprints in dried blood indicated heavy-boots worn by a either a small man or a large woman.

"You have a number for cave inhabitants?" she said aloud.

Derek stopped forward motion, closing his eyes and letting out a slow, deep breath. With his eyes disengaged, his other senses, inluding his 'inner' sense, were free to work at a higher level ( ... )

"Are we going to have to look for hearts?" Jun asked even though she knew the answer. "We're going to have to look for hearts. It would probably be a good idea to train dogs to find them. Also? We're not spending the night here. You say these guys work in packs now? Wouldn't be surprised if the sheriff's called in reinforcements."

She approached one of the two entrances farther in and cast a glance over her shoulder, "Which one?" In her hand was fluroescing marker, ready to be slapped to guide them out when the time came. "I can't help but think," Jun said. "That it would have been better for me to disable all the cars. Think the humans'll come after us?"

"No. If they were really going to stop us, they would have shot us..." Derek replied quietly, "Or tried to, anyway. They're under the master's control, but not completely...not yet anyway. They still want out."

"And if we're quick about it, we won't have to worry about where to spend the night. "

He smiled at the sight of the flourescent markers. They would work nicely...

He made his way over to the entry ways, standing between them and closing his eyes again. Quiet...concentrate...

"...shit..." he breathed, "Two that way...the other one...or two, to the right..."

'Shit' is short for 'I didn't bring enough back-up.' A grin accompanied Jun's thought. "Two masters?" she wondered aloud. She gave her shoulders a shake and balanced foward on her feet. There was a moment where she allowed herself a static swagger when she ducked and threw her arm up and behind her, dropping back and tightening her hold on the crossbow.

Derek shook his head.

"No...just the one..." thank god...

He paused as his awareness was shifted slightly. Derek tensed, backing away, towards Jun.

"One of them is coming up...not the master..." he whispered. Almost silently, he drew his sword.

Jun's crossbow did a slow whirl and point in the right direction.

"You think they brought presents?"

"We'll find out..." Derek's remark was just above a whisper. He'd put the flashlight down and out of the way, closed his eyes. Sight would do him little good in this. He'd have to depend on other senses ( ... )

Derek closed his eyes in a clean moment, marshalling his resources. Jun leapt to avoid the grasp of one assailant. On the drop she caught the other with her flexed heel across the shoulder. Its fingers vised around her ankle. Her silver yo-yo bashed in its cheek and blew through its head which exploded in gooey black, spattering her slippery muck. Her slick ankle rotated easily as she pivoted midair ( ... )
