"That was close," Daisy muttered, wringing water from her dress and walking over to a coughing, sputtering Luigi. "Are you okay?"
Luigi spat out the last mouthful of river water and shook his head.
"Not unless this is a shortcut to the Pipe World," he said. "Daisy, I'm really sorry about all this, I should've watched where I was walking...I wish I wasn't so clumsy!"
"Don't worry, Luigi, as long as we still have the-"
Daisy reached for her bag and started digging frantically. It had to be there, there was no way it could...
"...map."
Luigi felt his heart leap into his throat. Oh, no, please tell me we're not lost in these dark scary woods, anything but that!
It had all started when Bowser's troops decided to go after the Pipe World treasury, and when Mario and the gang had tried to stop him, he'd pelted them with Bob-Ombs. In their haste to avoid being blasted to smithereens the gang had run in opposite directions. Daisy and Luigi had immediately gone in search of the others, and were on the right track.
Then Luigi's clumsy footfall had sent him over the edge of a cliff, and Daisy had fallen with him in a failed attempt to pull him back up. They'd survived the fall and swam along the fast-moving creek...which led directly into the woods. Dark woods. scary woods.
Luigi wrung his hands nervously and whimpered.
"Daisy, please don't tell me..."
She nodded sadly. Luigi fell on his knees and buried his face in his hands.
"Oh, we're done for!" he wailed. "We're lost, there could be all sorts of wild animals and ghosts arond here, we don't know where Mario and Peach and the others are, we're doomed!" Tears trickled down his cheeks and he felt like crawling into a hole from the embarassment.
Daisy knelt beside him and patted his shoulder.
"Cheer up, Luigi! I know it looks bad, but we'll fight our way out of this!" she said.
"What about Mario? For all we know he's being chased by wolves, o-or Goombas, or worse!" Luigi pictured his brother backed into a corner, eyes wide with terror as a host of creatures leered at him with their hungry eyes. "I'll bet he'd even try to fight them, too! Mario, you headstrong fool, if you-"
"Luigi, that kind of thinking's not going to help us, or Mario," Daisy chided. "I know it looks bad...I admit, I'm a little creeped out myself. But as long as we stick together and think positive, we'll be okay!"
Luigi looked up a little and sniffled.
"I guess you're right. I mean, when you think about it we don't really have a choice here," he said, actually smiling a little.
"That's the spirit! Now let's go look for a cabin, there's gotta be one around these woods somewhere!"
Luigi stood up, wiped away the last of his tears, and followed her.
*
They found a cabin. An old creaky one Luigi wasn't sure he wanted to be staying in, but he knew they couldn't afford to be picky. They dried off as best as they could, then feasted on some fish Luigi managed to catch.
As the sun began to set, they knew they should sleep if they wanted to get an early start on finding the others, but neither Daisy or Luigi was tired. Even after the day they'd had.
"I still don't like this, being in a creaky old cabin in the middle of spooky woods, not knowing if Mario is all right or not," Luigi sighed as they sat on one of the tiny beds. "I really hope we find the others soon."
"Hey, they're probably looking for us as we look for them. We're bound to run into em sooner or later," Daisy said.
"You make it really hard to be pessimistic," he said, sticking his tongue out. Daisy giggled and pecked him on the cheek.
"That's the idea, sweetie!" Luigi blushed and leaned a little closer to her.
"I'm glad you're here, Daisy," he said.
"I'm glad too, Luigi."
