I really need to restrain myself from trying to have intelligent debate about religion with my father in law. He posted a really simplistic (to the point of over-simplifying and being ridiculous) explanation of atheism. When I countered with "Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones." which is more agnosticism than atheism, then asked if he was meaning practical/pragmatic atheism or theoretical atheism, he John 3:16'd me.
How can you have a debate with a person who automatically turns to John 3:16??? And yes, I've used "John 3:16" as a verb.
I generally have great respect for people of faith~having faith takes a lot of guts. But be meaningful and intelligent about your faith. Be thoughtful about it; be an apologist and be able to defend your position rationally. Throwing scripture around like it's going to make your point for you doesn't earn you any points.
