You should definitely come and join us! Most of us read the books when we were around the age of the characters, and it just took a strangely long time for us to make the connection between it and slash. ;)
I remember when I first read them, and was very young and innocent and didn't know what gay people were, but used to write very bad Mary Sue fic about DiR (I didn't know what fanfic was either, but I had notebooks full of it). Anyway, I remember thinking it was sad that Will and Bran were both boys, because they'd be perfect for each other.
Imagine my glee when I realised they still could be. ;)
Wow. It's over twenty years since I read these books, and you make me want to go back to them. It's alarming how many of the plot snippets you mention came flooding back to me.
Thanks for an interesting read! I last read these books over fifteen years ago, when I was about 10 years old. A lot of the details are fuzzy, but I remember how much I loved them. It's strange to read an adult perspective on a childhood memory. When I read The Dark is Rising sequence I identified most with Jane (hardly surprising, given that she is pretty much the only female main character), and loved her crush on Will because I think I had a little crush on him too
