And thank you! I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

See, I think it was just a matter of time. I see shades of Willow/Oz and Giles/Jenny -- couples that were wonderful and sweet, but had many outside impediments that eventually exploded into badness and angst. One of my favourite of such scenarios is the idea that something very bad happens to River or one of the crew (in protecting River) because Simon's off spending time with Kaylee. Oh, the self recrimination and angst! (poor woobie)

So I don't think wedding bells would be chiming. In fact, I see a relationship having just as much tention as the pre-relationship period with these two. One step forward, two steps back. And there's more than enough UST with Mal and Inara;) And while Simon can seem the perfect hero... his interactions with Kaylee often bring his flaws to the forefront, so I think the relationship would complicate things nicely for him. Not borning to me at all!

Heee! I know!!! Or considering that they haven't kissed yet (according to Joss)... wasn't hoping to sleep with said person;) Seriously, rewatch the scene and look at exactly where her feet are. The word lap could easily be replaced with crotch, as the wonderful sffan pointed out, despite her slash coloured glasses;) That scene never fails to make me happy!

oh the self-recrimination and angst
If that happened, I think Simon would finally manage to shoot someone...himself. Because in the Jossverse there's a close relationship between heroism and suicidal despair.

Y'know considering what happened to Buffy after the first night with Angel and what happened to Tara after her reconciliation with Willow, near-rape and being shot in the leg would be right in line with the Jossverse take on initiating a sexual relationship.

Really? I don't think I can see Simon suiciding at that, if at all. He takes the Hypocrates Oath very seriously. Sure, he'll be very, very broken... but still determined to get River back. As long as she doesn't die... (at which time I could see a killing spree taht he knows would mean his death) I think the rest of the crew could help pick up the pieces. Especially Mal, who has had to deal with a similar loss of beliefs.

Yeah, 'cept this sexual relationship would happen after all that stuff, not before. *hopes for some S/K action in the BDM*

I confidently expect S-K UST in the BDM to "leave something for Miss Manners" for the second movie.

I think Simon is very, very brave BUT one reason he can be so reckless is that, like Buffy in the "The Gift," he's just had it up to HERE and is willing to "save the day, or maybe melt away--I guess it's all the same." But OiG shows that he's invested in surviving, at least SOME of the time.

See, he hasn't really lost everything. He still has River, even though she's not the same. He has a pupose - fixing and taking care of her. Take that away and who knows if his ties to Serenity would be strong enough to prevent him feeling like he has nothing left to lose.

I still think his survival and doctor instincts are too strong.

If he keeps telling people who are in a position to kill him that they'll have to either do what he wants or kill him...sooner or later, somebody WILL. So I don't think his survival instincts are to the fore in a lot of canon.

Yes, but that's to save River. He'd give up his life for hers in a second. Or at least he would have, until Jubal threatened raping Kaylee too.

I've always wondered, considering kin relationships and species survival when looking at evolutionary biology (some animals will sacrifice themselves to give the advantage to related animals because it best preserves their genes in the long run) if that didn't come into play a bit here. Just subconsciously.

One source of conflict that I haven't seen expressed a lot--if the culture really does have a strong Chinese influence, Simon would have a lot of angst about being a bad *son* in the interests of being a terrific brother.
